Just wonderd if anyone has upgraded from the MKI to the MKII version and if so how do they compare on focus speeds and image quality with the 2x tc fitted.

The image quality from my MKI 300 f2.8 IS L is superb when you nail the shot with the MKII 2x tc on it as you can see from this one with the 7D but the focus misses loads on bikes even with the 1D MKIV attached as its just a bit slow.

Would be good to know if anyone has tried the new 300 with the new 2x MKIII tc and if its any quicker than the last version as i believe they have re-designed the A/F on the new lenses and they now perform better with the new tc's.

Been offerd a good price on the my MKI in px for the new 300 but now the 1D X has been announced i need to decide which one will give me more keepers for my motorsport next season. My other alternative is to save up for the 1D X and hope the A/F is better and quicker than the 1D MKIV when used with my current 300.

Heres the image from the 300 f2.8 IS L MKI with 2x tc on a 7D

I've never even touched a 300mm 2.8, but I had to chime in to say great shot.

Thank you for the comment :D

I guess that not that many people have upgraded to the new 300 MKII then yet.

Keep your MKIV, save for a 500 or 600 prime. TC's are always a compromise no matter how good the lens you screw them to is.

Yes but sometimes even with that compromise they are still the best option :)

Not for me. I'd rather crop from a 500 than use a 2x TC to get to 600...been there, tried that.

Cheers JVK and Geoff.

Hired a 500mm F4 for BSB at Silverstone and hated it as i cant stand monopods and prefer to handhold hence using a 300 with tc's for the reduced weight.

There is at least one thread here of someone who has the new 300.

Not sure how the above shot is anything short of excellent though.

I have the new the new 2x TCIII and while it's better than the older version, it still slowed focus on my 200 f2 with my 1DIV.

The 1DX which I played with yesterday at the photoshow in NYC yesterday isn't going to speed up focusing with a TC by that much.

But the fps sound was amazing, especially at 12 fps with the mirror locked up.
