Many of the electronics manufacturers are getting hit hard with the flooding in Thailand. Canon had issued a statement recently that one of their component factories was getting hit hard and it could affect deliveries in the near term. But how would you like to be Sony as you can see in the linked newspaper article. Bangkok Post article (external link)

It's a tad ironic as the industrial estate to the north of Bangkok, where many of these companies have set up manufacturing plants is a cause of the flooding in Bangkok.

Apparently the estate is built on an old rice field and all the natural drainage has been removed.

It's not just Sony.

Here's nikon. I think this is where they make a lot of Nikkor lenses, sadly:

This warehouse says Canon on it, but it was from a story about Hard drives, so I don't know what they do there. Rumor has it that they only did printers in Thailand.

This warehouse says Canon on it, but it was from a story about Hard drives, so I don't know what they do there. Rumor has it that they only did printers in Thailand.

The Canon plant there does full assembly of printers but they also make components for other products such as cameras which are then shipped back to Japan for final assembly. Some of the articles that I have read recently Canon hinted (but wouldn't come right out and say it) that this flooding may have impact on deliveries in the short term. I only hope they don't make any of the components for the new 1 series.

Having been involved in a couple of floods it is downright devastating. Nothing quite like this but we had about 3 feet of water on the main floor and a full basement. You just gut it and start over.

I've seen new HD price nearly double in the past week and used market is probably starting to pick up as well. When I checked at local Walmart (was there for different reason) they had empty shelf where HDD's (both internal and external) normally go. The price tag on the shelf are unchanged from the past few weeks so people are probably going to B&M stores as they are usually slower to raise price than online stores.

If you have a new or an used one in 500+GB range that you probably won't use anytime soon, I'd consider selling them soon. Who knows how long the shortage could last.

From an article on CNN.com:

http://money.cnn.com …iland_flood_supply_chain/ (external link)

On a conference call with analysts last week, Toshizo Tanaka, Canon's chief financial officer, said the company expects to make 100,000 fewer full-sized cameras and 1 million fewer compact cameras this year due to the floods.

Dang. How many full-size cameras does Canon sell normally in a year? Are we talking 10% of sales, or 1%, or less?
