DIY portable background stand?

I have been looking some cheap and portable backround stand, but i haven't found one and now i'm interested making one. In Ebay there are some cheap ones, but shipping cost in Finland arent cheap. Have somebody tried a make one? I will use it alot in outside.
I don't now yet what kind of background i'm gona use..Paper, canvas, vinyl, muslin? What do you guys prefer for outside usage, but also in inside. Color must be white.

id say if you have access to pvc pipe... you could whip something up that you push together.. and take apart to store...

I did a PVC and it's a pain in the rear unless you leave it in one spot. They just aren't easily asjustable unless you keep a wide variety of different length pipes on hand. Cost was about $30 after fittings and pipe. Not worth the trouble at all when you can get this for $70:

This thing is spring-loaded, adjustable on height and width, has metal screws instead of rivets on pivot points (amazing to see in inexpensive stuff) and instead of wingnuts which strip out if you get them too tight, there are levers - kind of like having a lever ball-valve instead of a wheel valve.
