I just bought a timer remote from Ebay, 100% identical with the Canon TC-80N3, except the missing Canon logo. Even the printed manual is the original Canon manual.
The timer apparently works fine, i can use as a remote shutter release, the LCD is working fine, i can set all kind of combinations, interval shooting, long exposure, etc.
When i press "start", the countdown is working as expected, only the picture is not taken, the shutter simply not released. If the lens is in AF mode, the camera will try to AF but the picture is still not taken.
The only time when the shutter is released is when i set the long exposure mode, but in this case the shutter speed set on the timer is not respected. For example if i set 5 seconds and the camera is set to 1/20, the picture is taken at 1/20.
If i set the camera to BULB it works fine, but only if i want to take one picture...if i set the long exposure with interval shooting, it will open the shutter first time but will never close it.
I changed the battery to a new one, not helped. I'm using it with a 20D.
The camera is set to M mode with 1/20, single shot, no timer and the lens to MF.
Is the remote faulty or i'm doing something wrong?

Are you sure you have a remote for the 20D? The ones I see specify bodies they work with. I have one for my 7D that works great. I've not tried that one on my 20D. But I will.

Mine seems to work fine with the 20D too. I think the camera will control the shutter duration - the timer won't over ride that - but the camera is good to 30 seconds. I tried it on bulb w/2 second shutter and it took the 2 pictures it was set for with the appropriate interval between them.

Sounds like a timer problem.

As long as the timer remote has an N3 connector it should work fine with the X0D series, or any other Canon camera that has the N# connector for the wireless shutter release.

I had 100% the exact same problem, but an original Canon TC80N3. I just sent it back to amazon. Obviously defective. I'm quite amazed to read of somebody having the exact same problem. I have a 5D. Sorry, I assume this is not the answer you were looking for.

Seems to me that mine came quite fast. I think this is the outfit I got it from:

Because it uses AAA batteries I prefer it to my original which runs off a button battery.

Did the new one that came through work properly?
I have the same problem with one from ebay and I'll just ask for a refund if these generic timers are temperamental..

Thanks.
