My son graduated HS last year, so I sold off the 7D and long lenses thinking I wouldn't be shooting HS sports (football or basketball) anymore. Got a call from a mom who has no real shots of her son playing. Tried to explain that my gear probably wasn't suited for the task, but she insisted and hired me.

All football shots 5D2 and a 135L with ambient light. Guess ya get what you can!

1. Looking to throw ...

7. One of the fans with the 35L. I love this lens!

Delivering around 50 shots to the mom today. I think she'll be happy even though these aren't ESPN or SI quality. Again, ya get what you can with the gear at hand.

Dave,
I've been thinking about trying this. What ISO are the photos under the lights?

Looks like you have some decent lighting. WB in #3 looks off.

Pretty sure basic settings were f/2 on the lens, 1/640 at ISO 3200. Small school, muddy fields and not a lot of light. I had to stick to shooting certain areas of the field because the lighting was 'spotty' at best!

Yeah, thanks. I think the WB is off in the first three. They look kind of blue looking at the white areas of the white jerseys. I tried to batch correct the WB and probably should have corrected each image individually.

Really enjoyed it and believe I really miss shooting the kids. HS football is a great environment to be around.

The mother will be nothing but super excited with these images. We all look at our own stuff so critically, she on the other hand is going to love and charish each frame you took of her son and never notice anything wrong with any of them. Not that there is much, if anything wrong with them at all.

And yes, the 35L is a killer lens. Nice shot!

I shoot high school night football with a 7D and 135L. I let my 70-200 2.8 go. Overall, I like it but there are time when I wish I had more reach.

Yours are looking good!

Dave - looks like they still need you down there! Those look good! Stay in the game.
I guess you've got a pretty good athlete down there, I'm guessing linebacker AND quarterback?

Hit that one on the head, Bob! Yeah, wife's nephew. He's quite the athlete. Also small forward on the basketball team. He should be going to Ashland University on an academic scholarship to play at least football next year. Great kid and good family as well.

Thanks Chas and Slaptix. Parents are really happy with the shots. G'ma and G'pa got the early 'free' prints and should have lots on order from the player's mom and dad.

7D and 70-200 2.8L IS. Exactly what I've been shooting with for the past three seasons. Can't beat that setup. OTOH, with the 5D2 and the 135 it felt like the plays were 100 yards from the lens. At 200mm on the 7D, that's like 280mm (or a 300mm lens!) on the 5D2!

I have the opportunity to shoot a lot of HS football and D3 college. Like most, the 70-200 f2.8 II is preferred, I really like the 135L. It is more limited in distance to the play, but also offers some great opportunities. I find I am much more alert to focus and composition with the 135. Guess that statement could go both ways, good and bad.
