Well I done done it. Me and grandma are going way south next January to celebrate her b'day. I've started going over in my mind the gear I'll take with. I plan on walking a few jungles; floating a river; being around for sunsets; that canopy tour/hanging bridges and whatever. I have both a 7d and a 5d2 and I've pretty much decided on the 7d due mainly to the fact that my ultra wide end starts at 8mm and the better auto focus. I have a fair assortment of glass but don't wish to take it all. But I will pack a flash and both a tripod and a monopod and sufficient cards, batts and chargers. So my question to those who have done like trips is...what one focal range(s) did you use the most? What's the 'don't leave home without' suggestion?

It has been a few years since I've been down there and some of my gear has changed. From what I remember when I went down there was that I used my 100-400 a lot. Was there for mainly birding it was kind of dark in the jungle but worth it. I would have used higher ISOs but with my 30D at the time high ISOs were not very clean. After that I suppose my most used would have been my 17-85 and my 50mm CM. I was mainly in the cloud forest and then the east coast during this week trip.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the response. I'll probably end up packing the 100x400 altho I'm not real excited about toting that much weight around all day. I'm good on the short end and I may take a prime and/or macro. I'll probably change my mind 2 or 7 more times before I go...thanks.

Yes, they have quite a lot of hummingbirds and they are there all year even some from farther north during the winter months.
