This is just one shot from a shoot yesterday.

How, when you have a white car with a person in dark clothing and a dark background, do you NOT blow out the white car?

BTW, the glare above the windshield is actually sun flare.

I can and did try doing some masking in Photoshop, but it didn't look right.

Any C&C on the shot would be helpful.
I'll post a couple more maybe tonight or tomorrow...I'm at work right now.

Did you try using recovery in Camera Raw?

How, when you have a white car with a person in dark clothing and a dark background, do you NOT blow out the white car?

First, have a plan. Put the car where the light makes it look good. Black/Red/white car links: Post #52:
Then light the person.

BTW, the glare above the windshield is actually sun flare.

It tends to pull my eye away from the subject, just as the "cool" RR sign growing out of the fender does.

Thanx PhotosGuy!

Question: Once I get the car looking right (combination ambient and strobes), how do you light for the person and not bleed your person light all over the car? I know you could use a mass of gobos and scrims and what not, but if you don't bring the person light in at extreme angles it's going to hit the car to some degree, yes?

Excuse my ignorance.

Ok...
So what I did here was split my image into two adjustments in DPP; One just for the car, and another for Travis and everything else. Then I brought both images together in Photoshop and combined the two images.

Better?

There you go! You answered your own question.
We used to do it in one shot with 8X10 view cameras & 30+ second exposures. Models would have to hold still, & they did. Now, with PS, life is SO much easier! ;)

Just out of curiosity, can you use the same technique on the first photo?

@CJGilbertCompany: I will have to try later. That picture, above, is not one I am planning on keeping. It was just a throw away test picture for me. Kind of a proof of concept maybe?

Using my lighting, I have never shot anything like this before, where there are multiple subjects needing completely different lighting all at the same time (makes me dizzy thinking about it). Plus I only had two lights with me. I guess if I had more lights and a plug power source and a bunch of stuff to direct the light where I really wanted/needed it to go, I could pull it off in one shot.

Oh, and I was on the downward slope of a nasty cold, which i'm still feeling the effects of today :(

I've only been shooting strobes since March I think.

@NeutronBoy: HDR wouldn't be a bad idea at all. I'm not a big fan of HDR, but for that back wall and the car it may work. Don't know if Travis would look right in HDR though. I'll have to experiment!

@Brandon Anderson Photos: LOL that's a little stuffed animal, as is the one on the side mirror. He wanted those in a few shots. He took them away after a few shots.
