I really wanna move to a full frame camera and I have a feeling the new 5D III won't be released for quite some time.

So I need to be pushed! The only thing that worries me is the slower fps with the 5D II vs the 7D. I shoot just about everything including sports. Do all the other factors outweigh the fps difference between the cameras? Is the frame rate really that bad? (that seems to be everyone's biggest gripe)

Has anyone sold their 7D for the 5D II? Pros/Cons? Do you regret it? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you,

Christian

The AF on the 5D II (Except for the center point) isn't all that great either.

So much slower FPS, and much slower AF (with the exception of the center point on the 5D II), are two things to seriously consider.

Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever! ;)

I didn't outright replace my 7D, but yes, the frame rate difference is quite drastic. 3.9fps is not terribly slow, but it's not 8fps either. In addition to the frame rate being halved, the shutter lag and viewfinder blackout time are longer on the 5D. If you shoot primarily fast action and find that you depend on the 8fps continuous shooting and AI Servo performance of the 7D, then the 5D may turn out be an unacceptable replacement.

Center point AF works very well on the 5D, and the outer points are very usable in good light. But the 5D's AF system cannot stand up to the 7D's 19-point all-cross-type setup and its broad configuration capabilities.

Image quality and ISO performance on the 5D are better. This is a simple fact.

You will "lose some reach" (pardon the expression, for some find it inaccurate) at the long end of your 70-200, but the wide end of your 24-70 will appear to be a proper wide-angle lens. This can be either a benefit, or a detriment, based on your needs.

It's all up to whether you feel that you need it or not, really.

Yeah, that is very true. Good points. I think I might have to stick it out and wait for the 5D III. Hopefully it will be released before 2014! :)

More great points. Thanks for your input.

I have a 5D2 and have ZERO problems with the AF for sports (I shoot soccer, running, golf, basketball, volleyball).

Anytime I've missed focus, it's been because of user error, not because of my camera.

I saw your pics on flickr and they look great.

I guess I was just hoping I'd get a bunch of responses that said "Are you crazy? Hell yeah you should sell your 7D".

I had a feeling the decision wasn't going to be so cut and dry. However, If users are getting away with decent sports pics like yours, It could sway me towards the 5D II

I have had multiples of both cameras, and just like others saying that sports (depends on the sport) can be shot with the 5D, it is also true that you can get some really good rivaling IQ shots with the 7D.

Here is an event shot with both cameras (annotated as to which images shot with which body):

Here is a sporting event shot with both cameras (first 19 w/7D, rest with 5D2), both at high ISO:

Next tme you have a sporting event coming up where fast AF and shutterspeed is important rent a 5D II. Give it a try for yourself. Then you can make a decision based on what you really need.

A lot of my shooting is sports. High FPS isn't as important to me as fast AF locking on the subject. The 7D and even my 40D do a good job of that.

For sheer superior image quality - the 5D Mk II - IS SENSATIONAL!!! - keep this studio-based

Sell your 7D - NO - have both - use this as your 2nd camera

And that's exactly what I want! Superb image quality. I only shoot sports when my daughter is playing BB or Soccer. I am off to Key West next week for the powerboat aces. When I shot last year, I had my T1i along with the 55-250. The pics weren't that bad when the boats cruised by doing 150mph

I just emailed my guy at ABT electronics. I get everything at cost, so I'm going to see what he can do for me. :)
I was going to buy the T3i for my daughter (she is taking photography classes at school), perhaps I should save that money and let her use my 7D. (She takes better pictures than I do.)

Much depends on what you are shooting. Those are two very different camera bodies.
Neither is a great substitute for the other.

Use 7D for wildlife, sports, or if you need that extra crop reach. Use 5DII for studio/portraits or landscapes.

I don't shoot any studio work and probably won't for a long long time. I am just a HUGE hobbyist that is addicted to photography and I want the very best IQ I can get.
