I have been using a canon t3 for a while but decided to sell in order to go for a better camera. I really wanted to go for the 7D body through the Canon Loyalty program, but I don't have any great glass. Someone is offering me a 70-200 F4 Non IS lens for $475. My options now are spend $700 on a 60d body and $475 for the 70-200 F4 lens or spend around $1200 for a 7D body and have no good glass... any suggestions??

i don't own any of the three camera you mentioned, but why not spend your money on glass instead and keep your current body

What glass do you have? I'd suggest picking up a 17-55 2.8 if you only have the kit lens or one of the third party 17-50 2.8s along with the 70-200.

If you're set on a new body, what do you shoot? If you don't shoot sports then the 7D's extra features are pretty useless. That's where the extra burst and AF points come in handy

I guess my question here is, will it be more worth going after a nicer body or getting some higher quality glass?

Photography is a visual stimulus so always go for the glass first.

Bodies come and go but a quality lens is good for 20 years or more.

Glass is the investment area...not bodies. There is a reason why folks pony up for L lenses and other top perfomers.

What are you wanting to get from the body upgrade? Is there a tangible need or just a desire for something "better"?

The reason I ask is that if you have a real need for some specific features, then it may make sense to get the 7D and the better glass later. But if you have no reason, then you should go for the glass.

IQ is nearly identical. Do you need the AF features, MA, or better build of the 7D?

He has t3 not t3i. So he'll gain quite a bit IQ improvement from 60D/7D

I just picked up the 70-200 F4 L lens, the thing is absolutely flawless! I will be ordering a 60d tomorrow. I have used a friends 60d for about a week and I loved the camera, I could potentially order the 7d, but it just doesn't seem like the quality/features will be so substantial that I have to spend $500 more just for the body...

The 60d files have almost the same quality as the 5Dc - especially the noise pattern at high iso. See Imaging Resource http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM (external link)

If you're set to get new body go pass the 60D and grab the 7D and get all the extras. May not use them now, but later? you never know.

I meant the IQ between the two bodies he was deciding on.
