Just got it home yesterday and did some initial playing around and customization.

Will be the weekend before I can give it a good workout.

Moved from a 20D and so lots of things are new and/or better - bigger viewfinder, bigger screen to chimp, live view, loads of customizations etc etc.

One quick qtn: when I have registered an AF point, does it continue to show on the viewfinder even if I have selected another AF point manually? And related to that, does that point become active only as long as I keep pressing the AE lock button?

Thanks a lot.

Looks like you have some great lenses to go along with that new toy. You should get great pics.
Congrats.
Sorry, I don't really know the answer to your question.

Congrats. There's a great sticky here about the 7D. I recommend you to read it.... then re-read it again. Lots of links there to help you get acquainted with the 7D.

IIRC, all you have to do is orient the camera to horizontal, register the preferred focal point, then rotate the camera to vertical shooting and register another point. When you orient the camera either way, it remembers where the registered point by orientation of camera body. To 'register' a point, use the joystick to position a point then press straight in to 'save' the point. I think that's how I did it.

I used this extremely useful feature a lot shooting basketball.

I believe, but am not certain, that if you have an AF point registered it will show up as the "selected" point until you manually select a different point, which will then show as the selected point. I think the currently-selected point (including if manually selected) will be shown as the selected point as long as the camera is turned on and you haven't selected a different point. I'm not sure, however, what happens when you turn the camera off then on again with regard to registered point versus manually-selected point.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

OK, my question was not very clear and I apologize. I have already registered 2 points - one for horizontal and one for vertical orientation. After this, I also assigned the * button as a quick key to return to the registered focus point.

After this, I was focusing on a scene and used the manual auto focus point and selected a different point. The original registered point still shows up as a small square in the view finder. Is this normal?

At this point, when I press the * button, the focus shifts to the registered point - but only as long as I keep the * button pressed. Is this the way its supposed to be?

Realized that the focus was off for every lens on the 7D. I could correct all of them with the microadjustment settings.

Surprising thing is that it was different settings for the three lenses I tried - 100-400, 24-105 and 50/1.4. All these used to work perfectly fine on my 20D. How can their adjustments be so different then - one of them was -ve and the other two were +ve!!
