I was driving to work this morning on my way to the city (Chicago) and noticed a great sunrise happening over lake MI. Right as I started taking a picture, I got an error code 30. "shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off an on again or re-install the battery.

Anyway, the camera went dead. I took the batter out, turn it back on and tried taking a picture. Again same thing. (I did this process about 4 times). I notices that the pictures I attempted to take showed up completely black.

When I finally got into work, I removed the lens and put it back on. All of a sudden it's working again. Not sure if this had anything do to with it or if it's just coincidental.

Is this a shutter related issue? I know it's working, but I leave next week for a Poker Run boat trip from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West and I ABSOLUTELY need a camera! I obviously can't send it in and hope for it to be back by next Tuesday.

So, should I assume this problem will come back, or was it simply just an issue with re-attaching then lens?

Thanks!

Christian

i'm not too sure how valid this is, but i found this on http://photo.net …gital-camera-forum/00WcpB (external link)

Error 30 is a problem with the shutter. Often the shutter is either stuck open or stuck closed. On Canon DSLR's its often stuck open often from using LiveView.

I saw that. Thank you. I wasn't shooting in Liveview. I'm just hoping this doesn't happen again while on my trip.

Well, I'd definitely do as much shooting as you can between now and then -- just shoot anything and everything.

We have in fact seen strange things happen because of maybe a bad electronic connection with a lens, so I wouldn't dismiss the idea. Take photos, and if the problem repeats, try taking the lens on and off again -- it would be useful data to send to Canon, and would indicate that at least one lens would need to go in to the service center. Of course, if it happens with both of your Canon lenses it would seem that it's the camera that has the problem!

Hope it was a one-time-only event, though! Good luck and have a fun boat ride!

I was having this problem a few months ago, the camera was throwing up Error 30 constantly. Before sending it in I updated to the latest firmware and 3000 shots later it hasn't missed a beat. Worth a try if you're not already on the latest firmware...?

Firmware here http://usa.canon.com …eos_7d#DriversAndSoftware (external link)

Expand software and drivers and download. About 13 MB and easy to do. Just make sure the battery is charged up before doing.
