So I have been tinkering with idea of selling my 24-70 for the 50L. While I am very happy with the sharpness but I like not having to use flash indoors. Being that I have the 24 and the 85 would you do at the expense of zoom versatility. I probably won't buy a second body so that is out the question.

I was in the same situation about 6 months ago. I was going to sell my 24-70L to pick up the 50L. After posting a similar thread, I decided to add the 50L to the 24-70L.

6 months later, I'll tell you that I use my primes about 90% of the time over my zooms. There is a time and place for zooms, and when I need versatility over speed I'm glad I have very capable zooms.

If it's possible (financially) for you I would suggest adding the 50L to your current setup. The 50L is definitely something special. I've produced images with the 50L that the 24-70L just can't.

The 50L isn't the sharpest lens out there, but the images produced by it are amazing (for lack of a better word, it's something words can't describe).

Why not try the 50 1.4 for a while, which is pretty darned good in its own right, and see if it works ok for you? Upgrade later?

Short answer - No.

see the thread - https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1110854

Besides, the 50L isn't that great nor sharp, plus the focus shift problem totally turn me off.

For that kind of money, i'd rather spend it on sigma 50 + 135L. much better combo imo and compliment the lens you already have nicely.

Honestly speaking I'd rather buy 50 1.4 instead of selling the 24-70. 50 1.4 is a very good lens and considering that mk IV is very good at higher ISO f 1.4-1.6 should be more than sufficient. AF isn't that bad either.

Definitely!! (but I have 2 50L's and no 24-70)

I probably wouldn't do it for the reason you state though. Sometimes flash is just better indoors.

I own over a dozen lenses, but my 24L, 50L and 85L are what I consider my core kit. Looks like you're 2/3's of the way there. :)

No for sure. Side by side and from a business point of view (as this is how I made my living) customers just don't care.

I sold my 24-70 after getting my 50L and have no regrets.

I guess it all depends on what you shoot.

For me the answer is definately no.

I tell all photographers the following: Your flash is your most important tool in your bag. Get 2 before you do anything else. 580/430 combo.

Then get the following:

24-70 or 24-105 for short zoom
70-200 for reach
16-35 or 17-40 for Wide angel

Add your primes after you get good quality zooms. They are invaluable to a professional photographer.

First prime I would get would be a 35L or 50L depending on your style
85L or the sigma 85 for portrait work
135L for a little magic

They dont call it the holy trinity for nothing

Are they? My zooms sit in my bag.

Sorry, I just hate this misconception that professional photographers need zoom lenses. People just need to use whatever they're most comfortable with. I very rarely use my 16-35 or 70-200 at weddings, and I don't own any mid-range zoom. Certainly not an approach for everyone, but it's what works best for me.

Thanks for the good feedback. To answer all of your questions: I thought about getting the 50 1.4, but had heard about so many people having the micro usm break. As for the 135, I love the lens have had it twice, but in the end as much as liked it I didn't use it. Now as far as is this a pro job for me? I would say semi pro, I have a full time corp job that has good pay and benefits so I can't shoot full time. I have been starting to do more events and a couple of weddings here and there. More as a passion to make extra cash on the side to fund this cheap hobby. :). I then also thought of the sigma 50, but didn't really want to have to send it in a wait for a month to use it. I will check out the other thread listed and see what they said there. Thanks again for some input.

OP:

If you're in a position to get the 50mm 1.2L - then I suggest going for it! it is quite amazing

As for the 24-70L, in your shoes, this would be an ideal walk-about lens - especially when you travel.

Yep, all keep your primes for indoor/specialist work

Just FWIW, if you're getting paid for photography, you need a backup body. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, but there needs to be more than one.

I sold my 24-70 for a ZE 21.

I don't see how every full frame user can get along without a fast 50.
