Just FWIW, if you're getting paid for photography, you need a backup body. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, but there needs to be more than one.

Yeah I agree, but I have been waiting for a new 5d to come out or maybe sell my making for the x and then get a 5d mkii.

depends, i've seen more than a few 24-70's that were pretty bad. if i had a good one, no - if i had one of the not so good ones, i'd trade in a ny minute.

No. I LOVE my 50L but it is too slow focusing for a lot of work. Wedding and events you will miss important stuff. If you have the time to focus on what you shoot, then by all means, get the 50.
A lot of people **** about how the 50 has focus shift, I found that 99% of the time its user error and you need to take your time with a shot. So depending on what you shoot, get it or not, but I wouldnt give up a reliable zoom for work purposes. Besides that, the 50 will stay glued to your camera...

its slow, ohhh yes. will the 50L focus like the 70-200IS2? not a chance

but, really, the AF speed is not THAT slow.

AF isn't that slow. Definitely not 85mm f/1.8 speed though. My take: just buy it and see if that lens ends up replacing the 24-70. Since I got my 50L I haven't touched my 24-70 which is why I'm selling it.

Nope, don’t sell it for the 50L. I don’t know about you but I had primes before (35L, Sig 50mm, 135L, etc) and I sold them ALL. I thought I’d get away with shooting with primes at weddings but I was wrong; I completely switched to zoom lenses. I don’t know how other pro wedding photographers shoot with primes. I love my 24-70 and 70-200 II and I’ll never get rid of them. I’m going to throw another UWA zoom this week (17-40L) and MAYBE upgrade to 50mm 1.4 from the 1.8 II but will never get another prime. IMO, zoom lenses these days zoom are on par with prime IQ-wise. Primes are a little-tidy SLIGHT better than zoom at same aperture settings but that’s only if you pixel peep.

So if you can get away with a zoom and have some sort of an off-camera lightning, KEEP IT!!

Absolutely agree..... If you shooting for weddings or event, Zoom for much better for versatility and ready for shoots in split second.

But if you dun shoot for money, 50L is much better lens or even couple of Zeiss lens.... I love my T* 1.4/85 better than 50L for the rendition.....

This has not been my experience at all. YMMV.

I don't know what type of shooting you normally do. By my fovorite set up is a 16-35IIL, a 35 f1.4L and an 85 f1.2 II L. I generally use a pair of 5DII's with these three lenses. I often take a 100mm IS L macro with me too, but only if I think i'll need it. I can pretty much cover 90% of my shooting needs with these lenses, although the option of a longer 135L is often nice too.
If I use a 24-70L, then i'll use a 135L as well for the long end.
My copy of the 24-70L is sharper wide open than my copy of the 50L. The 50L is an amazing lens, but it's not as spectacular as your 24mm or 85mm....in fact it's not quite as nice as the 24-70L either....but it's a real sweet lens all the same.

I shoot a crop and sold my 24-70 and got the Σ30 1.4 HSM and the Σ50 1.4 HSM. The Σ50 is an great piece of glass. The added bonus is that in Canada the Σ has a 10 year warranty and that's something Canon can't touch. Next primes will be 135L then the 200L.

I wouldn't be without a versatile normal zoom + fast prime. The 24-105 and 50L are my basic combo, one couldn't replace the other.
