x-rays won't hurt anything. when you board, tell the flight attendants you're a photographer and ask if it will be ok to take some pictures of the people you're traveling with. they like to be asked.

As you're a professional, you'll get leeway on the airline restrictions. I carry my kit on airplanes with a Pelican 1510 plus a smallish camera backpack. Peli 1510 matches the airline size requirements, but will likely be over the weight limit if packed full of gear (if the airline you're flying with has a weight restriction on carry on, some don't). Stands, tripods, and other non-delicate gear goes under the plane.

I've been stopped at check in before because the case was too heavy, but I explained I was a working photographer (bit of a lie, as I'm currently an assisting photographer) showed them a card, showed them the kit inside and explained the value, and they were then fine letting me onboard. According to the lady i dealt with, a press pass can sometimes make things simpler as well (although as i work with advertising photographers, it's not much help).

Too much liability on their shoulders to force you to check the case in. Just be polite, don't be greedy by trying to bring things you could have checked in in your carry on keeping your carry-on as minimal as possible, and you should be okay :) *hopefully* Oh, and the Peli 1510 is perfect for airtravel. highly recommended and US made.

....it's just about the biggest that will pass for carryon, and you can put a lot of stuff in it. I've had 45 pounds in mine.

Allright....so you guys got me curious, because I normally never pack the 300 2.8 in this Tamrac backpack.
But here you go, it fits with a few other things, and really, some little stuff could still be tucked away in the nooks and crannies.
There is also a battery charger for the one series in there too that I forgot to label on this shot.

I know this thread is somewhat old, but how often have you guys been stopped or questioned by TSA regarding the weight of your carry-on? I'll be doing some flying with my gear this year (all within the US) and while I clear all the size restrictions for both the airlines and TSA, I'm only worried about being overweight with my Pelican 1510 case when TSA does their security procedures.

I've been flying with a 1510 every other week, since November, and have never had it weighed. I use the 1510, because it can survive being gate checked, so I'm not too worried about it.

No, I'm not a professional photographer, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

TSA has no say on weight or quantity of bags. You could put 100 Anvils through the XRay machine and so long as none of them contain more than 3oz of liquid or nail clippers the TSA won't care.

Your Airline however, will feel quite differently... ;)

Awesome! Thank you so much for the info and confirmation, definitely a weight off my shoulders :)

Luckily the first airlines I'll be flying on (Air Trans, never flew with them before), doesn't have a weight limit for carry-on's either :) And I just saw on TSA's site that screwdrivers under 6 or 7in in length are allowed in carry-on's  I wouldn't have thought that'd be possible, guess I'll have to learn how to cut my nails on the plane with my screwdriver ;) I'll probably still pack the phillips I use for Go Pro's in my checked bag, prefer to keep things as calm and smooth as possible with TSA.

Don't assume there's absolutely no weight limit because the aircraft itself has an absolute limit for the overhead bin. And that limit isn't "per passenger." ;)

Oh, and DO NOT put your GoPros in your checked bag unless you want to record who stole them.

Good point FlyingPhotog :) Fortunately I packed the GoPros in the 1510, I might as well hand them over when I check duffle bag to get it out of the way ;)

Well, lucky for me that now I'm retired, I don't have to step foot on a commercial airliner anymore, however, when I did fly, I was never asked, questioned or hassled about the weight of my carry-on camera bag ( backpack ). In fact, I can't think of any time that either an airline employee or TSA guard ever even actually handled the entire bag. I've had a few TSA folks open and look in the bag, but they never picked it up.

I know when it's fully packed, it ain't a whole lot of fun to have strapped to my 60 year old back ! I'm to the point now that it's such a pain to try to shrug it on, that it's easier to set it on a table, and back to it, and sneak the straps on that way.

If you are ever hassled about a carry on bag weight by a ticket agent (has happened to me - 36 pounds one time) explain the value and fragile nature of the contents and that unless the airline is prepared to assume responsibility for the full value (they are not) that you cannot check it.

They are able to make exceptions and if you are reasonable they are (usually) too.
