As a kind person I feel guilty.

However, I don't think I really owe antyhing to the buyer.

Sold my XSi Camera body on these forums a few days ago. Buyer contacted me via PM and did not reply to the thread. Like I always do, I looked into some of his started threads, they had started two in F/S and one in the Weddings section. Things seemed okay. Buyer haggled with me a bit and we decided on selling everything in the For Sale listing minus the Opteka Grip for a price. He never told me things he was expecting to get, only "I'll take everying in the kit except for the grip" As usual, I contacted the buyer via e-mail then phone to confirm shipping arrangements etc. We swapped e-mail addresses for further communications and so I could forward the UPS iShip tracking information.

I shipped out the item 1 day after the sale and provided the tracking information.

I get an e-mail at 4:45am this morning informing me that he received the package and he was concerned that he had everything but the lens. Stating again he wanted everything in the kit minus the grip.

To double check my posting, I checked and I never listed a lens. My photo's did not even include a lens, not even in the background. Now he's saying he's not happy with the sale and thats where our communication stands at this moment. I offered to help him find a lens, but I don't see how I'm liable for a misread listing on their part? His communication seeems to be intermittent.

What steps should I take to protect myself? I've never had a really difficult transaction on the web before.

well i dont think you are wrong... as you didnt have a lens in the pics anywhere...

only cuz you asked what you could do to protect yourself in the future...
1. list out each item numbered.. so they know they will get item 1-5.... then when agreed upon and paying.. reconfirm item 1-5 and make sure they convey back they are getting 1-5... and ship item 1-5... when they say they didnt get #6 u then can say.. look back at the pm's and all other things as it was listed and you confirmed items 1-5

His last e-mail to me he basically told me that the box said the kit came with a lens. Which was probably true when the item was brand new. The seller I got it from didn't ship it with a lens and didn't have it listed either.

I'm now being told that I'm an unkind person for doing this.

then best deal when stuff like this happens to me is i say..

there obviously is a mis-communication... would you like to ship it back to me and i will refund your money?. But refund is only for full amount where they have to pay shipping back to you.... so if they are not satisfied.. they are only out the shipping back as "they" were not satisfied...

Grr.

He told me that the XSi body on ebay is going for the same price he paid for my camera body. He's completely forgetting that I shipped my camera to him with a Sand Disk 4gb Memory Card, PNY 8gb High Performance Memory Card, and 3 extra batteries. Whether it came with a lens or not, the price was fair.

If you ship the buyer a lens, I want one too. I'm not picky, but I like the white ones... ;)

haha

I sent him 25.00 for the misunderstanding. I'm feeling nice today. It does'nt compensate for the lens but I don't feel comfortable with someone feeling like I misled them in a sale.

That was a nice gesture to send the $25. I looked at your for sale post and nowhere did you mention a lens. There was a lens mounted in your picture, perhaps that led to the buyers confusion. You certainly didn't do anything to mislead.

There wasn't even a lens mounted in the pictures. Unless you are talking about the picture of the shoes, in which a lens was mounted to obtain the picture but that hardly seems relevent.

The buyer has calmed down a bit now, I think he was frustrated with his lack of attention to detail. Though, me refunding him $25 seemed to help as well.

He doesn't seem to understand he got a Canon XSI with 24k on the shutter, 4 batteries, all original paperwork and cables, a 4 and 8 gb memory card, charger, and original strap for, now, 325 bucks. I say he got a deal. He still thinks I was out to get him.

You're right. Looked at the post again, must have been the angle (or my bad eyes). Could have sworn it looked like you had a small prime attached.

I thought I saw a lens on there when I first looked at it as well and I knew that there was not. The second pictures clearly shows it as the just the body cap, but if the buyer did not know I can see where he would have made that mistake.

I think you took the high road here and saved yourself a big headache. You could have offered to refund him, but then you need to go through the hassle of selling it again and the second cost of shipping would be a good chunk of that $25.

I would have sent a bill for an additional $25 for wasting my time.
