Is the Canon 28-200 USm a good lens?

I was in a pawnshop looking around and they had the original digital rebel and this lens for 249. They wouldnt sell just the lens, I figure I can get them down at least 20-30 bucks. Is it worth picking up?

$249 is pretty cheap. You could sell the Digital Rebel for about $100 and then play with the 28-200 for awhile.

You will probably discover that it is not all that sharp and the lack of IS will be frustrating. Then you could probably sell it for about $150 and break even.

OR..... Just get a used 55-250mm IS for about $150 and get a sharp lens with IS.

It is a good price. Adorama sells it new for $450 USD. You could sell the Digital Rebel for at least $100.

The lens is ok but not great. The front element doesn't rotate when focusing which is nice and it focuses quite closely which is helpful. It is supported in Canon's DPP software for distortion and aberration correction which improves the image quality further. It is a little less sharp than the 28-135 IS. You can make great pictures with it but if you are a hardcore pixel peeper, you might not like it.

The 28-200 is best used on full-frame where the range is more suitable and where the lens appears sharper than on a crop camera due the the reduced enlargement and the smaller apertures that you tend to use on full frame to get as much depth of field as on a crop camera.

It is quite poor. I have one and don't like it at all. It is only sharp part of the time, and has in my opinion poor color reproduction

Sell that bad boy, then. You could probably get enough for an 18-135 IS which is a pretty decent lens. (And incedentally roughly 28-200mm equivalent on APS-C)
