Here is my dilema. I tend to shot when I'm out and about at anything almost. I got a 1 gig card for my Rebel. I need some suggestion on what form of storage should I use when I sometime upload my pic to my laptop and edit then and I might finish editing on my desktop. I want to also use this device for backups of my photos. Thanks in advance.

couldnt you just store it on your laptop? if not there are portable media devices such as the epson p2000 that have built in hard drives and cf card slots. or even the microsoft versions of those devices made by creative, archos, etc (not sure if all of them have card readers). these portable media thingys would be the most convenient but more pricey

as for me i always have my external 2.5in 40gb harddrive to store all my pictures (about $60). but of course youll need a computer to go with that to get pictures onto there.

Generally the devices which permit transfer of data from digital camera memory to a self-contained harddrive (Epson, Digital Foci, etc) also can be plugged into the USB port of a computer.

Do you use your drive as a backup of all your photos and if so do you feel safe doing so?

I have a portable storage device with a laptop hard drive in it.. Yuo can plug almost any flash card into it. Press go and it copies the files to the hard drive so you can get them off later. Good thing is you can also edit on the drive later because it's normal hard drive speed. I bought it off ebay. the device cost me about $AU40 and the 60 gig laptop hard drive cost about $AU120. It's got a lithium battery and works a treat. copies 1 gig CF card over to the hard drive in a little over 5 mins. 60 gig shold suffice for 1 day trip I think :) Way easier than lugging a full on laptop with you.

In my case I backup to both DVD and an external hardrive for archive purposes. by having both the odds are much better one copy will survive.

While traveling I have multiple CF cards and a portable storage drive (in my case a Wolverine 80GB Flashpac). If it is critical enough I both copy it to the drive and keep the card until I get home and can archive the shot. If not critical then I just copy to portable drive and then format the card in the camera. I trust the Wolverine to get my data home and into archive. I would not trust it for long-term archive, ignoring for a moment it doesn't have a lot of space for the pictures I take (I have been going through one 250GB HD per four months).

its the only place i keep a copy of my photos so ill my originals are on there considering even the best cds have been tested to have only a shelf life of 10 years. i say once a cd or dvd degrades theres no way to get that info back, on a hard drive its different with recovery programs and services that are avaliable.

how many times do you actually hear a hard drive erasing all its carrying anyway? pretty much none. hds will fail true but theres usually pre-symptoms-of-a-failture like random clicking or freezing of the drive that will signal you that its time to change. its a toshiba laptop drive, should be pretty reliable.

too bad theres not one format that is gauranteed to last. picked up my drive on ebay new for about $50 last year and then added another $10 external enclosure

hehe yes i feel safe

Hello

i was thinking that it is possible to shot directly to the computer, but if we are shooting in raw the transfer is too slow. Anyone here knows if it is posible to shot directly to the computer using a firewire cable? instead of the usb.

if exists firewire readers for the cards, maybe exists also some firewire cable one side and on the other side mini usb to conect to the camera.

anyone knows? anyone already tried to shot directly to computer? in raw it is too slow. someway to speed it up

hello

anyone knows if there is someway to shoot directly to some portable storage device.
i know that to the computer with remote capture we can, but if you would like mobility a usb storage device could be cool the usb2 transfer as a good rate.

there is someway? to do it.
info please.

another thing what type of CF card do you recomend?
What brand? Scan disk ? another?
and witch card?

what is the diference between the 16 bit (cards
up to 2GB) or 32 bit (for cards larger than 2GB). Only the size of them or other diferences?

thanks

So, am I understanding with one of these little portable hard drives(portable storage of any kind) you can download directly from the camera (in my case 300D) or flash card to the drive without software? My biggest problem when I go to Costa Rica is running out of CF cards (no matter how many I take) and then not being able to download them and put them on a CD at one of the local Intrenet Cafe's ...Usually they won't let me install my own canon software , and when I did the tech took over to load the data on a remote CD burner and lost about 1/2 my photos...Ya I almost came unglued!)...I would appreciate any help on this from anyone....

as far as i know only the apple ipod has the ability to take photos directly into its harddrive via a compact flash adapter. or of course the portable media devices or windows portable media devices do the trick too but cost a bundle more

there is no usb to firewire cable as far as i know it, they are two different standards.

With my Digital Foci Media Buddy all I need to do is insert my CF card into one of the slots in the Media Buddy, press a single button, and the entire CF is written into a folder on the harddrive in the Media Buddy. No laptop needed, not even much intelligence is required to use it!

I am really interested to hear more about the Wolverine Flashpac. Does anyone else have any experience using one? What are the Download times from Card to HD? Can you tether it to the Camera and shoot directly to the HD? Thanks.

Yep! (If it's set up to work in a client/server type of relationship.) A garden-variety PC external hard drive probably won't. You may find this thread to be relavent: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=108010
