So, am I understanding with one of these little portable hard drives(portable storage of any kind) you can download directly from the camera (in my case 300D) or flash card to the drive without software? My biggest problem when I go to Costa Rica is running out of CF cards (no matter how many I take) and then not being able to download them and put them on a CD at one of the local Intrenet Cafe's ...Usually they won't let me install my own canon software , and when I did the tech took over to load the data on a remote CD burner and lost about 1/2 my photos...Ya I almost came unglued!)...I would appreciate any help on this from anyone....

Epson P2000 and P4000 can not only transfer your CF card to HDD but you can even view RAW files w/o SW. Archo and Wolverine can transfer but not view RAW. IPOD can not view RAW as yet.

Peach; this is the one I got:

https://photography-on-the.net …=84059&highlight=digimate

I bought it off ebay without a hard drive (bought my own).

Only note is it came with a power adapter from hong kong; not for the US. So you either need to get an adapter to power it or it will charge via USB.

I loaded my 2 gig card on it and it dumped the card 9 times on a single charge before running out of battery.

Hope it helps!

Recently bought a portable storage device off ebay. Cost £67 UK Sterling inc PP. It is called an ImageTank. Came complete with a 30GB 2.5" HDD. The device includea a Li-ion rechargeable battery and has card readers for CF I/II, CF microdrive, Smart Media, SD, MMC, XD, Memory Stick (I think). Basically every type of card. You dump the images with it's built in software then erase the images from the card in the camera. That seems to be the only drawback - it doesn't erase the images itself. Connects to the computer with USB2. No preview screen but you have one of those on the camera.

EDIT

Just looked at the digimate in one of the previous replies and it is identical. The manual that the poster scanned in even states 'ImageTank' on the first page.

EDIT 2

You can also recharge the battery using a nokia phone USB charger

I carry enough cards for a day's shooting, I have 8GB right now, I only used 4GB on a 3 week holiday to Fiji, Bali, and Sydney. I copy the cards to my PC when I get home, manually mirror it to another internal drive, then copy it to an external drive that I keep offsite (at work). I should get around to burning some files onto DVD some time as well, but they're so small, and I have about 60 GB of photos which grows by about 10GB each wedding and a few GB of personal stuff each month.

I just bought the Wolverine Flash Pac 7000 (40GB, $189 @ B&H) . I haven't tried it on my PC yet, but did transfer a couple hundred Canon RAW images to it. It doesn't seem to be as fast as when I Xfer from my card reader to the PC (via firewire), but its not too bad, and I suspect I won't be using it often enough to mind the speed. Claims to be able to move 6GB of data with one charge of its internal Lithium Ion battery -- of course when its connected to the included power adapter, that's not an issue. Very simple (almost too simple if you ask me) interface. On/Off button, and 'Copy' button. More control is available when hooked up to PC. It does fit all types of memory natively (no cables, adapters, etc.), you just plug your card in and hit 'Copy'.

I did notice something in the instructions that states that any time you put a card in and hit 'copy' it will NOT overwrite your existing files, but instead create a new directory and copy ALL of the files again. I'm not sure I'm crazy about this, because if you're away from your computer for a while (as I will be), then you could quickly use up a lot of space if you try to move photos 'incrementally', since you CAN'T delete them from this device until you get to a PC. (e.g., if you copy 100 photos from your CF card, and don't delete them from the card, then take 50 more photos, the next time you hook up, you'll copy all 150 photos, which will be in addition to the 100 you've already copied, thus using 250 pix worth of storage for essentially 150 pix). So be careful with this.

I'm going to Africa later in the month and didn't want to buy a bunch of CF cards that I'd never use when I got back. So for around the price of a decent 2GB card, I've got a 40GB storage device that I can Xfer to from my current 2GB card.

Believe me though, I plan to use this extensively between now and the time of my trip, because I want to make sure its reliable.

6GB per charge is almost worthless IMHO, if I bothered to buy a PSD i'd want it to do more like 20GB per charge, otherwise it's just not worth the bother. Or carry extra batteries.

Thanks guys...Ive been looking at the image tanks..seem like just what I need and get good reviews...new ones here in the US are about $160 US and if I can scrape up a few pennies I'm going to go for one...a good used one would be nice at the right price, but Im leaving the countryin 10 days and would need to get the transaction complete and goods in my hand a day or so before I leave, and Ebay or private sales can take some time...I'm also a bit scared to get a used one, land inCR and find it has eaten my photos...Ahgggggggg!

This is all quite intresting and I'll bet a real PITA! I'm betting that all these device similar to yours handle the files this way! Most of the product reviews I have found don't go into a lot of transfer details..

Tim..I'm with you on the cards, I'd like to have more , as I very seldom pull the trigger just once...but if these devices work as planned I'd like the option to unload some of these cards if necessary! The cards aren't that easy to pick up in Centeral America should I fill them up..One of the worst mistakes I made in my life was going on a freighter in 1968 to the Pursian gulf and India with 5 rolls of film and thinking it would be easy to pick up when I ran out...Ha ! talk about watching your shots........!

Just bought a generic nokia USB charger a while ago and wad desperate to recharge the device - no usb lead and no other charger. I tried it and it worked. Most nokia phones use the same size charger plug so almost any nokia usb charger would do the job. The main thing is that the usb port will supply the correct 5volt supply required
