On average, when taking rolling shots of cars where does your aperture hang at?

I've always felt more comfortable shooting manually and my aperture usually hangs at f/20 or something to get a speed of 1/30ish at ISOs of say, 100-400. Am I doing it wrong? Should I be cranking up my iso to keep my f-stops wider? Gonna go hang with the club tomorrow and wanna get some rolling shots of a few 3000gt's :)

Keep your ISO at 100 ESPECIALLY during the day (you don't want any noise). I use f/9 and 1/40 sec. The settings that you said might too much of a blur. Here's one of mine at my settings:

Your main objective with rolling shots is to show motion, not warp speed. You want to give a sense of location and direction, yet give a decent blur for the wheels, ground, and background.

Aiming at a car ahead or behind, I'm usually around 1/10. For a car on the side, around 1/50.

For car to car rolling shots, I usually try to stay around 1/speed. That setting usually gives a pretty good amount of blur on the wheels and background since it is dependent on the speed of the cars. Aperture isn't as important to me as long as the car is in focus with appropriate depth of field; foreground/background are going to be blurred by the motion anyways.

1. Shoot shutter priority 1/60th
2. maintain 60+ mph speed (faster the better)
3. shoot with sun behind you.

My samples, I shot them with sun against me because this is just event coverage and I cant really tell the cars to move around.

The first one I shot using a tracking car and a friend driving my golf, second one was shot by me whilst driving on the motorway one handed! I used to photograph car/motorbike racing for a living so have good experience with anything that moves fast and panning :)
