Yes another thread, soz. Didn't want to 'takeover' Dave_G's thread so posted a new one. Hope it's ok. Too many shots in one thread would take too long to load anyway I guess :)

Yep I was also at the Tempest Rally yesterday (Saturday) and in particular the Longmoor stages, right on my doorstep, well almost  Here's some forum friendly snaps...

#1 "Don't cut" - oops

#2 Now this was the perfect line

#3 Lady driver? You wouldn't think so!

#4 Swift - loved the rev limiter

#5 Ahh the 205 1.9GTi, lovely (miss my old one :( ) - sadly not a T16 though :p

This was my first ever attempt at photographing rally cars. Very tricky conditions, possibly the hardest I've ever shot in. Very low light, ISO 800/1600 and difficult to judge exposure because of light through trees, reflections etc.

Would appreciate feedback and also recommendations for a 'rally' lens. I will definately be going to the Tempest next year and maybe a few other local rallies :)

Cheers

nice work AzzA - really like Suzuki and the Stobart Scoob.

the difficulty (from what I've experienced) comes with the changing light and the trees covering stuff up nicely.

With club rallying you can usually get quite close to the action, for some of mine I was using a 28-80 (x 1.6 obv) at 28mm!

50mm f1.8? 85mm f1.8? or if you want a bit more of a versatile lens you could splash out on a 70-200 f2.8 L thing...if you're feeling flush! most of the ones I posted were taken with my trusty second hand bargain 75-300mm.

as for other rallies, the Sunseeker in February is usually awesome 8)

Thanks. Yes you hit the nail on the head with the changing light through trees.

A 70-200 2.8 is on the shopping list, but it's err a bit too expensive for me at the moment. I'll look into the 85mm... I also have a 75-300 but it struggles somewhat in low light.

Thanks for the heads up on the Sunseeker rally, will definately look to go next year :)

I was gutted to have missed this event! Ended up at Santa Pod (I know where I would rather have been). Again I'm a big fan of the Stobart Scooby shot. Thanks for sharing.

They all look good to me, but I think the Hyundai is my favourite.
On this years Sunseeker I managed with my F4 300mm and 70-200 until late afternoon, then struggled. Hopefully I'll have something a bit faster in time for next years rally.

I've been looking through my pics from the Sunseeker and they aren't very good :D Looking forward to next year's so much now. I need to avoid the areas that are covered by trees as I don't have any fast glass...although a 70-200f4 might find it's way into my bag....but not sure....not sure I can push to a f2.8 though

There is a way ;)

Nice shots Azza, i like the fisrt Scoob, it's always nice to see some bits of scenery flying

I've never done any rally shots but i plan to before this winter is over.

Grizedale stages or the Roger Albert Clark looks likely ;)

Depends on your price range...

The Sigma 70-200 2.8 is sub £500 from HK or around £560 here..not a lot more than the 70-200F4L. If we bump into each other at some point you're welcome to try mine.

You know what, I've used a Sigma 700-200 f2.8 EX DG HSM etc etc and it totally slipped my mind! Ta for the reminder :)

However, the 120-300 f2.8 hadn't, which is £1k!

Sorry for the hijack...:(

A 700-200 F2.8 would be nice  :D

I'd also forgot about the Sigma 70-200 2.8. I would love the Canon IS 70-200 2.8 but my budget will never stretch that far. I'll look into the Sigma.

Would you have to fit it on the camera backwards ? :)

LOL

the Sigma 70-200 2.8 is MASSIVE! about half as girthy (is that a word? is now) again as the Canon 70-200 f4 and about twice the weight. brilliant bit of kit, I couldn't believe how fast it focused compared to my (second hand hahaha) Canon 75-300USM.

Great bit of kit that
