Hi folks

This may have been bought up in the past but I'm not sure how to describe a search for it.

This point was bought up in another thread and I could not find an explanation for it.

This links to the post in the 1DsMk2 thread that brings it up
https://photography-on-the.net …p=13355214&postcount=9061

It doesn't really apply to me as when I use my flash on camera, I'm always in Manual on the camera but with the flash in ETTL.

It's a known issue with no explanation and no cure.

Is that an issue only with the 1Ds Mk II? or do other Canon cameras do it as well?

No. It's was an "issue" (but that's who Canon designed it) with other cameras around the same time as the 1Ds MK II and earlier cameras. But Canon changed the way the camera work with the flash in M mode with the 1D MK III and other models that came out around the same time (like the 40D, I think) and later.

Even the 20D had the CFn to choose either Auto shutter speed selection with Av mode and flash, or option for fixed shutter speed at 1/250

But that's not what is referred to here…

The only way to use a flash in "M" with a 1D(s)2(n) on Av (or P, should you want that for some reason I cannot fathom), is to connect the flash using a PC sync cord.
Been there, done that, works okay.

I was keying off the OP comment "For some reason, when I change the flash to Manual it sets the shutter speed to 1/250 in Av mode. No matter which dial I turn, the SS stays at 1/250" and the 1DsII lack of a CFn for Av mode flash shutter speed. The OP link failed to mention the type of connecting cord as the root of the issue, so I didn't think about investigating that. And in view of your comment about 40D functionality, there wasn't any difference that I can recall between 20D and 40D flash functionality (although I have discovered the 40D does much better than the 20D for ETTL flash accuracy without forcing the photographer to dial in FEC on a permanent basis!)

If Leo is right (post #4), you should be able to use the 40D in Av with a 580EX flash in the hotshoe on "M". The 20D will set the fastest shutterspeed it can (either the sync speed, of 1/8000s if HSS is enabled on the flash) ;)

And yeah, the 1D3 is also leagues better in ETTL then the 1D2 ever was.

Thanks guys.

As I stated above, it never occurred to me as an issue as I don't use my flash this way.

The change of programming in the 40D/Mk3 onwards also explains why the same situation applied to my 350D, 30D & the 1DsMk2.

Unfortunately, I cannot bring myself to use this as an excuse to upgrade. Maybe when we see some hands on reviews of the 1DMkX
