Last night whilst out shooting some fireworks I went to set my focus manually. I looked through the viewfinder and thought, jeez the LCD is bright. I could hardly see with the blinding brightness.

Anyway I thought to myself, hang on, should the LCD screen not turn off when I look through the viewfinder? And that's my question, I thought it turned itself off, or have I been dreaming? Confused.

Derek

There is no sensor near the viewfinder to turn the LCD off when you raise the camera to your eye (that's a feature on some Rebels). Cycle through with the INFO button 'til the LCD turns off.

Must have been thinking off my 550D that I recently sold and clearly not used the 5d in the dark yet. I know I can turn the screen off anyway. Thanks for your help, I thought I was going mad last night.

Note too that the info screen is persistent. If you turn the power off, that same screen will show when you power back up.

1/2 pressing the shutter should also turn it off, I think.

Unless you are using Live View.

Alternatively, when not using Live View, you can set your camera to not automatically Review every image immediately. Just use the Review button to call it up (I also have the Set button programmed to activate Review... that way I can use either thumb to call up the last image taken).

Or you can set the Review to a very short duration... As little as 2 seconds.

To turn off Review, it's the fourth item down in the 1st Camera menu (Red tab)... The same is used to set Review duration, if you prefer.

You also can set the LCD brightness, or have the camera set it automatically. It's the first item under the 2nd Setup menu tab (Yellow). There are seven levels of brightness you can set manually... Or an Auto mode, which will dim the LCD depending upon ambient light conditions.

Even pressing the shutter button half way does not turn off the screen. Strange.

As for the review times and all that im happy enough, i just couldnt for the life of me remember how it was turning off before but it was my T2I not the 5D

Pressing the 1/2 shutter does work on my 5DII and I recall it also did on my 5D.

My Review Time is set to 4 seconds.

It depends on which info screen is displayed. The first press of the info button brings up color info (WB, colorspace, etc.) and this screen disappears with a half shutter press. Pressing the info button twice brings up the camera settings screen (aperture, SS, ISO,metering, focus mode, etc). This screen does not disappear with a half press.

Yuu're probably right. The only screen I use is the image review screen. I never use the other ones unless I bring them up by accident which happens far too often to my liking ;-)a
