Hi all,

Currently, I have a Asus 24". I am looking for an upgrade to a 27". I looked at the Apple LED Cinema Display 27" and the colors look superb. Of course, it will not work on a PC. Can anyone tell me what is the next closet monitor that will have similar output?

cheers

Why do you say the Apple Cinema Display won't work on a PC? It has a Mini Display Port and if your PC has an MDP output on the video card, it will work just fine. I have a Mac Pro with a flashed Gigabyte AMD HD6870 Graphics Card with an MDP and an HP ZR24w display with a Display Port. I am using a Mini Display Port to Display Port Cable and it works just. An Apple Display is really just like any other display, although the input ports are limited to MDP or Apple's new Thunderbolt port, which is backward compatible to MDP.

Personally I don't like the Glossy Screen that Apple uses, but to each his own. IMO, HP makes beautiful displays. It appears that HP has recently updated it's IPS Monitor Line Up and now has a 27" Display, model ZR2740w, here:

But as with all non-Apple monitors it is a matt screen.

thanks. I was told by the Apple store staff that it will not work. I will look into the HP monitor as well.

Unless Apple has changed the display's firmware then it probably won't work on non-Apple hardware. There was a lot of hackintoshers who tried workarounds, but no one could find them.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

^^^^See this thread:

http://store.apple.com …9KY9P4PKUKADUKXC2KH7JPYKT (external link)

If the PC has an MDP or if you have a Display Port to MDP cable or a DVI to MDP cable it will work as stated in the thread.

Oh, BTW, I believe all PC HD6870 graphics cards have MDP Ports. As I indicated above, I am using an HD6870 PC card in my Mac and it has 2 MDPs.

lowrider, thanks for the info. It looks like the old 27" monitor will work but does not mention about the new 27" thunderbolt connection.

^^^^I've done some reading since I posted, and it appears you're right, the new Thunderbolt display doesn't play nice with MDP. However, from what I have learned last years MDP display and the Thunderbolt display seem to have the same panel and construction, and last years model is still available. Sorry for the misinformation:o

^^^^Looks like a nice monitor, but the monitors we have been discussing are all IPS technology. The monitor you bought is TFT, TN technology. While TFT, TN mat be good, it's not really in the same league with an IPS, IMHO. Also the resolution is 1920 X 1080, which is the same as the standard 24" wide Screens. So you don't get more information than a 24" or even a 23" with the same resolution, you just get a larger picture with the same information.

All the reviews on that monitor seem to be good, so you appear to have made a good choice.

IPS is also TFT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD (external link) ;)

But I think the PX2710MW is a TN screen (2ms response time)
