Here's a few shots from a recent hike up to Black Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park last week, which also takes you by Mills and Jewel Lakes. We timed our hike to be at Mills Lake a before sunrise and hoped to catch some great light there. Unfortunately, the sky was clear but there was a newly formed layer of ice on the surface which added an interesting texture to the reflection.

As always Jon, great shots!!! Your timing was impeccable! #2 & #5 really strike my fancy.

The weather is definitely changing the landscape @ RMNP; soon it will be winter landscapes only (4 - 7" of snow on the trail from Nymph Lake to Dream Lake this morning while I was working @ Bear Lake Ranger Station).

We're going to try our luck tomorrow morning with a sunrise hike to Lake Haiyaha. I'm thinking these lake hikes are over for the season, but we'll see if they are worth it in the snow.

Which direction are you going to hike up? From Bear Lake TH or Glacier Gorge TH? Trail up from Glacier Gorge will probably be a bit more snow-packed after a few more overnight snows, but it was a bit icy on Sunday. Switch-backs down to Dream Lake and on down to Bear Lake TH and then Glacier Gorge TH were all snow-packed.

Good luck. Haiyaha is probably fully iced over now, but might provide some interesting imagery. Tyndall Gorge could have some great shot potential.

Sorry Pete. I got this before leaving the house this morning, but was in no condition to be typing. Driving was ok, but typing was out. :)

We left the Bear Lake TH at 3:30. It was our maiden voyage hiking up with snowshoes which proved to be no issue at all. The trail was mostly packed snow so other than one time where we tried to find a shortcut they mostly weren't needed.

The lake was iced over and did make for some cool shots with the rocks. I'll post up a separate thead once I get through them all in a week or so.

No worries Jon. Since I was working @ Bear Lake Ranger Station on Sunday, I thought I'd pass on conditions for you...:)

I'm thinking about going up to Lake Helene on Sunday to put my new 5DII through its' paces. :D
