My Attempt at Layer Blending in Photoshop CS5

I messed up the sky a bit, but I'd say that layer blending makes for much more realistic looking photos.
Do you usually layer em up and just hand-brush erase the layers from the top down? that is pretty much what I did. How can select and erase only highlights, so that, for example, the branches in the upper corners wont darken as much as the sky, but with no haloing?
This is the first time i've ever tried it, so I think its okay, but maybe I could do better.
Also
I'd like to boost the micro contrast type detail in the layered one, just a touch, not anything unreal.
I've thought of a couple paths:
*Apply more via Nik Viveza prior to blending.
*Layer an HDR version with the blended one, and only brush in the HDR slightly in areas with good "3D" potential (branches, grasses, etc) avoiding potential 'halo' areas of the frame.
*Run it through Nik Viveza after layering is done and turn up the structure a bit.
Any suggestions of tips?
