I have been working part time for a smaller daily newspaper for about a year now shooting mostly sports and a little bit of common interest stuff and this is a career I really want to pursue. I have been looking around at colleges but havent really seen any that have stood out in photojournalism besides brooks institute in california, which costs nearly 100 grand by the time you are done. If i where to actually goto brooks for visual journalism is there actually a decent outlook of getter a better job then if i went to a 4 year state university? If I look at a state university what should i be looking for? I am a senior in high school and I will be graduating this spring. Any advice would be greatly apreciated!!!

You might start checking out the best journalism schools and then see what specialties they have, such as photojournalism. There are other schools that specialize in photography, but without the journalistic emphasis.

Arguably, one of the best j-schools in the nation is the University of Missouri at Columbia.

and arguably, Western Kentucky University (external link) is #1 for PJ, pretty much a battle wherever you ask though, between WKU and Missouri. I will tell you the major difference I know about between the two, because I go to WKU and it's a common discussion. Missouri I am pretty sure has switched to a fully digital program, while Western still requires b&w 35mm for the basic class and chrome/slide for the intermediate and pjtech class following basic...after that’s it's fully Digital.

Western prides itself on Hearst competition winners, students from WKU have won it like 14 of the 15 years it's existed or something like that. The Hearst Journalist awards are considered the Pulitzer of the student world.

Brooks isn’t getting the returns from students it used to, photographers are a dime a dozen, I don’t think the education from there is near worth that. Is it a good program? It has a good reputation, but students from there aren’t making a big name for themselves anymore.

I spent most of last semester and the summer looking at photojournalism schools and decided on WKU. If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up on IM or something...my details should be on my profile here
