A dilemma,

Is it possible to use the 7D with the EF-S 10-22mm without damaging the camera? - is this combination compatible ? What advice do you recommend and are there any considerations.

My EF-S 10-22mm is really a great lens so I want to retain this if possible.

I will be in a position to finally upgrade my existing equipment and to replace my stolen Canon equipment during Feb/March 2012. So, I will be in Miami - USA for early spring with a view of purchasing 2 camera bodies. So, both the 5D MarkII and 7D have been selected.
[If the 5DMarkIII is available - then I will go for that - just depends!]
I will use 1 body for studio-work and the other body for travel/event/social use]. As for additional lenses, these are not necessary right now.

The 7D is a crop camera, so the EF-S 10-22 is actually made for it. No chance of damage at all.

Using the 10-22mm on a 5DII is another matter entirely.

Studio/travel/event/social. I see no reason to buy the 7D over the 5DII.

The 10-22 works fine on a 7D, not so on a 5DII.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I can see about 800 reasons, depending on the actual price. The 5D Mk II is a tad more expensive, and there would also be the need to buy a new lens (another 1000 reasons). The 7D is a great camera, period. I have shot a 5D Mk II, I like it, and I will get the Mk III if it ever comes out, but the 7D ain't no slouch.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

My EF-S10-22 is a GREAT FIT for my 7D. Got tons of excellent keepers already since i got the 7D not too long ago. Loving the powerful combo!

Yep - the 7D is and EF-S camera and you can mount the 10-22 with confidence. When I had them, the 10-22 was not good enough for the 7D.... The camera outperformed the lens completely. Many people love it so this might mean I simply had a bad copy of the lens.

You may also have seen that with a simple modification, you can also mount the 10-22 on a 1D3 or 1D4. I do not recommend it. The image quality is what it is but you can damage the camera if you're not careful.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

The 10-22mm Canon lens is made to be used with the 7D. The only problem I sometimes have is keeping my feet out of the picture at 10mm.

Suggestions welcome.

That's a great lens for the 7d. First time I tried mine it was one of those "WOW" experiences.

Thank you all so much for your feedback and insights.
I will proceed with confidence knowing that a new 7D and 10-22mm will pair together. So, for my outdoor kit this will be a perfect addition.
I was just concerned about the 2 types of crop factors x1.3 / x1.6 my existing 40D.

As for the 5DII/III - this is a dead-cert purchase for remaining indoors as my studio-based camera. If a great lens offer manifests out there then I will be tempted to pick this too.

I have always preferred to keep 2 separate dedicated kits for outdoor and indoor photography. It suits me to know that I can just grab my travel-bag kit assured that all the necessary 'stuff' is packed.

Cable-release, filters, spare batteries, 4-6 x Memory cards, cleaning kit, torch, travel adapter, flashgun, CAMERA and preferred walk-about lenses.

The 7D isn't a 1.3x crop... Its 1.6 just like your 40D. The only 1.3 crops out there are in the 1 series

Thanks for the correction! - It's all good then! ;)
[For some reason I had always considered the 7D to be x1.3] :o
