Coming up on the "gotta stay indoors because it's winter" type of days, today it's raining and I'm bored, so I tossed the sound-activated paint setup out and shot...Enjoy!!

Very nice. Must ask -- what is "Sound activated paint". I know I can google it but I'm at work... will give you some free bumps too. :D

There's a link in my sig that will lead you to my walk-through for doing this. It's basically a speaker facing up with plastic on it, and you drop paint onto it and use music to make the paint jump around. It kills a few birds with one stone: You get to listen to music, you get cool shots, and you stop being bored for a while.

And the best part is you probably have all you need laying around the house right now.

Dang - I thought maybe someone invented paint that changed color to the music. I was going to paint my harley with it.

Sweet shots though.

Thanks everyone...

Ette...It's paint on top of a speaker, then you play music through the speaker and the paint jumps with the bumps in the music. There's a link in my sig that will take you to a walk-through that shows how I do it. It's actually really simple to do, all you need is a speaker, some plastic wrap, and some paint.

Haha, that's great. I would really like to do this but it'd make too much of a mess (plus I don't have an extra set of speakers sitting around)!

It actually doesn't make much of a mess at all. I shoot on top of a little shelf that's only about 17 inches square, and I barely get any drops at all anywhere but on top of the shelf. The only time I'll see a drop on the floor or anywhere else is if I go nuts and blast the music really loud. As long as you use only a small amount of paint, like maybe a teaspoon or tablespoon worth, it won't be enough to go flying all over the place.

As for speakers, I had a Creative Labs 5.1 surround system I used to use with my computers, now that I have a receiver in the office I don't use the Creative speakers so I just grabbed the subwoofer. I'd bet if you searched around places like Best Buy, WalMart, etc., you could find a cheap set of computer speakers that had a sub that you could use.

I wouldn't recommend cannibalizing your home sound system for a speaker though, that could be a little bit too expensive...

Hmm, perhaps I will give it a shot sometime in the future, then. I don't have an external flash (well, I do, but it has no auto settings/timer) but I'm sure I could figure something out. Thanks. Your shots look great. I also just browsed through another one of your threads. I love The Juggler--you're certainly right about it looking a juggler entertaining children.

Beethoven, Snoop Dogg or Miles Davis, do you recommend?

Fun series of photographs.

And it gives you that excuse to finally replace your carpeting .

I've been using Jason Mraz "Geek in the Pink" a lot, "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele, and a few others. I think I was using 3OH!3 "My First Kiss" for these shots.

As long as you know the song and know when the bumps are coming you can use anything. I just stand there with the volume remote in my hand and my other hand on the shutter, and raise the volume until the paint starts jumping. Then I start snapping shots. When the flash starts to misfire I stop. I usually keep the flash power low though so I can get a good string of shots before I have to let it rest.

You can also use a keyboard or sound generator, I haven't tried my keyboards yet but I'm sure a deep tone would do some cool things.
