Thinking about trading my 5DII for a 7D + lens, am I crazy?

I've been contemplating trading my 5DII for a while. I kind of miss the reach of the crop body for wildlife, I don't shoot landscapes. I do shoot portraits but it was never a problem having a crop body before (50D). I think I thought the 5DII had some magic sauce, and it is an awesome camera but I'd rather have more/better lenses and less expensive camera. Which is the second issue. I find myself not pulling my camera out as much because its just too damn expensive. Its like I'm terrified to use it. I never felt that way when I had my 50D.

If I traded my 5DII for a 7D plus money, how much could I expect? I have an option to buy a 70-200 f/2.8 IS MKI from a friend for about $950 right now. It would be easier to swing if I had some cash from "downgrading".

Thoughts?

Been a few of these threads of late with your same intentions. From what you state the 7D sounds like it'd certainly be a better fit and if your 5DMKII has been babied like you say it should certainly fetch a decent price.

HAHAHA, I am going the opposite way for the opposite reason. I don't shoot wildlife at all, and I stopped shooting motor sport events last year, so I bought my 5D II on Amazon today...if I only I would have seen this thread earlier! Don't get me wrong the 7D is a great camera, but I was a backup in my friends wedding gig and used his 5D...wow, there is definitely an IQ difference. One thing I will note that I will definitely miss from the 7D to the 5D is the flexibility of the AF system. People rave and rave, obviously not center point blah blah, but the out non-cross type outer AF-points is where the 7D really has an advantage gap. Good luck, I am sure it's great for your purposes.

I think the only valid reason you listed is that you need the reach of a crop body for wildlife.

Stating you are afraid to pull it out because it is expensive is just a mental thing. Would you not feel the same way about a brand new 7D because it is new and doesn't have a scratch?

The more money for lenses is valid to a point, but would you actually save that much money trading the 5D MKII for a 7D? I would think the difference is not enough to buy any decent L glass. A used 7D is ~$1200 or so and a used 5D MKII I would assume is less than the $2,000 you can find the body for new. For me, that's not really enough to worry about.

I've just brought a 5D2 to compliment my 7D. Wouldn't want to trade either for anything, unless someone offered me a 1Dx next year for them. In the u.k. the 5D2 is about £400-500 more expensive than the 7D so if you traded in your 5D2 for a 7D, you should be able to get a fairly decent lens as well.
