Recently got myself a canon 400 5.6 L. Having no luck with birds (I swear the all somehow know I have the lens, and decided to vanish!), I figured I would shoot the moon. I have a canon 1.4x II T-con which I also attached to the lens.

Shot at F16, 1/160, ISO 200, 560MM, Mirror lock up.

I cropped the shot, then also upsized it slightly. Then did a noise-reduction, curves, levels, and contrast adjustment, then sharpened. Let me know what you think of PP, and shot overall. I think I may have SLIGHTLY missed the focus. I zoomed in with live view to focus manually, but I found it hard to get it exact since focusing shakes the camera so much, and the moon is only in a small part of the frame.

Thanks guys, I will give it a go next full moon with less sharpening. I missed the full moon by a day or two, because it was cloudy. This picture the moon is almost full. I also cropped it quite a bit, then upsized it, which may have contributed to the over-sharpened look. I also think I just slightly missed the focus, so that may have lead me to sharpen it too much. Will go a little easier next time.

I love that lens, which I rented over the summer, though I haven't used it on the moon. With a bit of cropping it can do really nice work on DSOs as well. See my threads on M51 and M101 at 400mm: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1063833 and https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1068002

Is this something I could do with a regular tripod? Never tried to shot DSOs before, ebcause I thought I needed an EQ mount.

No, you're going to need a tracking mount to shoot faint stuff at those focal lengths. I have a cheap motorized non-goto one that works, but was a pain to get aligned, though I'm probably a lot better at it now than I was back then.

Awesome image! When looking at the size of those craters you can only imagine what those impacts must have been like.
