I have asked for advice on this before when I only had kit lenses and was told that I needed something. So I now have the 85 1.8 and cant say that I am happy with what I'm getting either.
Place where we play has piss poor lighting so maybe I am just expecting too much.
I tried shooting with flash but found that 1/200 SS is not enough to stop the action although we are not that fast. LOL
Higher ISO (1600 and up) comes up noisy.
Below are few samples. I shot RAW and tried to process them to the best of my ability. I basically gave up on composition here (so dont mind that) and simply wanted to get the exposure right.
Am I at the mercy of the high ISO and noise reduction in post or do I need the flash that will HSS with my camera?
Please help me figure it out.

You have reached a limitation of your body, time to upgrade.

That's what I was afraid of but then again I am surprised that those extra stops with a faster lens are not making much difference. I was leaning towards operator error but you may be right Aaron.

I bought the lens mainly to shoot my son playing basketball and I know lighting is better in that gym. I will give it a go soon and see.

Just as an FYI, I shoot basketball at high school gyms with my 1D MIV & the 85 1.8 & I usually need at least ISO 2000 and shutter speed of 1/640 to achieve good exposure and stop motion. If you can allocate it in the budget, I'd recommend upgrading to a 7D. You can pick them up used for $1,000-1,200. If not that, then at least jump to the T2i, which has similar noise performance, just not the AF IQ or the FPS.

that was my first mistake: I picked up T1i where I should have spent couple extra bucks and gone for T2i. live and learn.
At this juncture upgrade is out of the question so I will have to just forget about indoor sports. No biggie and I love the lens for all the other applications.

Open it up to a full f1.8. I find the lens to be sharp wide open & that will get you a little more versatility in your other settings. I don't know what you're using for NR, but I find that the better NR applications are very good and go a long way in helping when you're equipment can't quite get you there.

The two best that I'm familiar with are Noiseware Pro & Noise Ninja. I've also just recently tried the free version of Neat Image & so far, it seems like it's a quality produt.

This guy does a pretty fair comparison of a lot of different tools:

I started using Neat Image last hockey season and it works great. Highly recommended.

The exif in some of your images show the flash firing. Is it the pop-up or a hot-shoe model? Doesn't matter really. Ditch the flash and put your camera in manual mode. Aperture wide open, shutter speed at 1/640th, and ISO set to whatever gives you a good exposure. You'll probably have to max your t1i out and deal with the noise in post. With the 85 1.8, get yourself into one of the corners and wait for the action to come to you. Mostly have fun with it!

it was a hot shoe flash. i tried using it but like I said in OP it didnt freeze the action.
I just got a trial of LR3 and NR is a lot better than LR2 or ARC I currently have.I will try the settings you recommend tomorrow and will report. :)
