http://www.wired.com …adobe-kills-mobile-flash/ (external link)

Adobe has killed Flash development on mobile devices.

Can't say we didn't see this coming, but all the people who kept clinging on to Flash, might want to re-think things now.

And to all of those who kept arguing in favor of Flash and why/how Apple was limiting you as a consumer, yada yada yada... can now eat a big ol pile of crow.

Well, really; why would you continue spending engineering resources on something that is now, or very soon going to be, supported natively in the web browsers people are using. With HTML 5, Flash doesn't have a gap to fill any longer. Sounds like someone at Adobe is paying attention and will redirect that effort and money to things they can be useful for :p

I've been trying to tell our people to drop it from our website for a while now given the popularity of the iPhone, it just seems like old hat now days, and rather pointless if virtually half the users of the internet on the move can't use it!

Well considering apple pretty much killed flash on purpose, it would seem that crow is being force-fed to us.

Ah... now... that's not true. Apple didn't kill Flash... Adobe killed Flash on their own... by failing to make it work on mobile devices at all, and by it working crappily on every other device for years.

Not to mention that Flash is now the largest vector for security violations out there...

Apple just saw the writing on the wall (as everyone else did) and then had the balls to remove it from their devices. They did the same thing to Floppy drives, SCSCI ports, and a whole host of other items. If the world has something better, use it... that's an awesome mentality and actually advances things for end-users.

Which is probably why they also now use Intel chips...:p

Yeah, why should a company let their customers decide what technologies they should use?

It's called free market.... if you don't like it, buy something from someone else that offers what you do want. I hardly see how that’s a bad thing?

Apple knows what experience they want to deliver to their customers. They work towards that experience, not towards a technology. They're one of the few companies out there that put the focus on the client experience and not the specs or technology behind it.

Not to mention that if they were wrong, it could have spelled the end of their product. It takes big balls to put the user experience first and let the naysayers have their fill. Apple never had Flash on their device from day one. That takes guts and commitment. Something that I admire.

You may admire something else, but for me, and millions of others - it works and we gladly pay for it.

Flash Player might be going away, but Flash and AIR on mobile devices are not.

That said, this is a big win for the web. Say what you want about "choice" and all that ... flash web content on mobiles, even Android, is an awful experience.
