Hello,

I have a friend who's teenage daughter just bought her first DSLR (T3I)
Since she bought the camera herself, buying any of the better editing programs is out of the question for right now.

Anyways, while trying to install the canon digital solutions disk on their computer we are having trouble. It is a gateway windows pc, Someone had installed the Ubuntu operating system on it when they were having trouble with windows.

When we try installing the canon solution disk that came with her new T3I, it will not install and everything I tried is not working. I am the first to admit that I know nothing about the Ubuntu or Linux operating system.

Any advice on how to get this disk installed for this teenager who is really excited to get more into photography?

As a short fix to let her get her feet wet with editing, I was able to download and install the google picasa program for her. I also pointed her to this great forum for any questions that she had about her camera or techniques.

Thanks in advance.

John

Addendum; I just saw the computers forum and realize that I posted this thread in the wrong place, maybe a Mod can move it for me. Thanks.

John

As to installing the Canon software on Linux, I'm afraid you are out of luck. You can look at Gimp, a popular "open source" photo editing software that started out in the Linux "world". I don't know of any other "mainstream" editing apps that are Linux-friendly, but I really just don't know:)!

John, I have to say it's not clear whether or not there is indeed some version of Windows is on the PC or not. Nevertheless, what exactly are the problems you are experiencing?

As Tony said, if it's definitely Linux then you'll have to try and get Wine working but don't hold your breath.

Hope you come right.

Thanks for the response guys,

I could not find a version of windows on the computer at all and it is definately wine that is blocking the install. I do not remember the exact message that comes up when we try to install the disk, but wine was mentioned in the wording.

I will take a look at gimp as an alternative, although so far it looks like picasa is working fine.

Thanks again!!

What you would need is a Windows "emulator", and I believe Wine is one of those. The question is, is Wine already installed? And if so, can the Canon software install with Wine?
