I'm thinking of selling my Canon 24-105 f4L IS but can't decide if I should do it or not.
I also have a 17-40 f4L, 32 f2, Sigma 50 f1.4 and I was thinking of buying an 85 f1.8 or 135 f2 if I decided to sell my 24-105.

24-105 is perfect on my 5D, WA to med-tele, sharp even at f4, IS

I don't know if I should hold on to it or sell it. I'm the kind of person that doesn't like having multiple things at the same time (sold my 40D, only have 1 watch, etc)

When I was in Hawaii this October I used it a lot, I'm out on a business trip right now and the only lenses that I brought were the 24-105 and 35 f2, when I go hiking it's my lens of choice. It's convenient but I feel I could live without it

I've listed it on ebay 3 times now then cancel it the next day.

It's an excellent walk around lens for your 5D. I see no reason to get rid of it. The 135L is still an excellent lens, but not wide. The 17-40 isn't really telephoto - there is some overlap there but not a ton.

I see it as you have an Ultra Wide in the 17-40, a wide to mid in the 24-105, a couple fast primes for when you need that, seems fine to me.

The 135 is a niche item. Got one but hardly use it-- but it's still in the bag.

Make a decision--a lens collection needs to fill any potential use IMHO.

Yeah only get the 135L if you do portraiture. I use it all the time for that.

Keep the 24-105. I would sell either the 35 or 50 and pick up a 85 f1.8 or even a 100 f2 to compliment the remaining prime.

To be honest, if it's the one you use the most (and from what you've said, it seems like it is), I see no good reason to ditch it.

thanks for the comments, I think I'll definitely keep it now and maybe either return the 35 f2 or sell my 50 1.4
both primes have pros and con (focal length vs aperture)

Personally I don't like it eventhough I have one myself. I feel extremely limited with f4. Range is nice thou but it lacks the sharpness, colour, contrast and mostly speed. Very ordinary zoom imo.

^ I was thinking of buying a 28-135 to make up for it but I know if I did, it wouldn't be the same as the 24-105 so I'm keeping it definitely now.
also had a crazy idea
5D + 35 f/2
40D + 50 f/1.4

pretty good combo to walk around :D

all depends on how much you love your zoom :D

I am heading towards the prime only route. thinking of selling it to get another prime :o

might get the 70-200 2.8 mkII as my only zoom in the future...

Here's what I did, not saying it's right for you: Keep the 24-105 and save money. Then sell it for a 24-70mm and a 100mm L. You'll wind up with 2.8 where you need it on the short end and 100m 2.8 IS on the long end. The 100mm L that can do portraits and macro, which will open up a whole new realm of opportunities. I also have an 85mm 1.8, which I don't find redundant.

When I walk around with lots of time to take pictures, these days I enjoy using primes (e.g., 35/2, 100/2, 50/1.8, 35L, 100/2.8 macro). But, I don't deny the usefulness of a zoom, especially if getting the shot in time critical situations is more important than not getting the shot at all. That includes situations where running around where stopping to take the best possible shot is the highest priority, such as at a wedding or on vacation.

So in short, I'd never sell the 24-105 unless I was ready to replace it with another zoom that suits my purposes better. For the 5D2, that would be a 24-70 mk II or 24-70 IS if one is ever released.

If you actually thought about selling your 24-105 to the point that you listed it on eBay a few times, then I say sell it. See if you can live with a bag full of primes. It might kick your creativity up a few notches.

If you find you miss the zoom, use a P&S or buy another zoom.
