I know from the Canon site that the Canon 7d is dust and water resistant because of the seals, but are there any additional precautions that you should take when you use your camera in the rain. In AZ we don't get much rain so I haven't really had to give it much thought...but now we are starting to get into the rainy season and I just want to make sure I take care of my investment.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I would wrap it on a plastic or something else water proof just in case.

If you're worried about wet weather, consider the inexpensive Op/Tech Rainsleeve. (external link)

I use a helper with an umbrella a lot. but the sleeve is useful in a downpour. If there is wind, I stay inside.

Thank you all for the responses, I will invest in the rain sleeve, seems like very inexpensive insurance.

Another great place to use the Rain Sleeve in excellent dry weather is ...

On the BEACH !!!

I've been using a so called " dust pump " and a rain sleeve on the beach and not one sign of sand or dust in or on the lens.

You really need the Rain Sleeve is your lens is NOT also weather proofed.

.

I actually used my 7D with the 24-70 attached no problem in the rain while I was in key west. I'd just wipe it down every once in a while and had zero issues with it.

You may not get much rain, but in the spring winds, there is a bigger problem with the dust and sand. When shooting in such conditions, use a lens that is sealed, or can be sealed via a filter (ie 17-40). And still, use a rain sleeve. After the shoot, use a soft brush to clean the body and lens. Then a mico cloth to go over them again. Rain will dry off.....not sand and dirt. ;)

With the 7d, you are gambling using it in the rain. Yes, it will work out fine most of the time...but it just takes that one time when water enters and you start getting weird behavior with the camera. Only you can decide if this risk sits fine with you.

I shoot in the rain a lot. I have rain covers for all my cameras.

I've used a plastic shopping bags too, the ones from the ABC stores are pretty solid. Walmart bags are flimsy.

How much rain are we talking about? I also live in AZ :) I've taken my 7D to Seattle twice now. It's gotten wet, as has my Canon 10-22mm, and no problems. If I was wearing a jacket then I zipped over the camera during the down times. This last trip I had it out in a drizzle without my jacket.

when you dont have a real sleeve, a small plastic bag and rubberband works wonders
