Long story short....the lens is just too damn heavy. I HATE to get rid of it.

So what to get with the proceeds. I need a long lens for Airshows/Racing so I was thinking of getting a 100-400L and a 24L II

Thoughts?

The 70-200 II + a new TC would be pretty nice.

I think the 24L + 100-400 would be great though.

I've been pinning after the 120-300 f2.8 OS for months now. I currently have the 100-400L.. swapsies?

In all seriousness, is the fact the lens is so damn heavy the only reason you are getting rid of it?
What is your experiences with autofocus speed, use of teleconverters with this lens?

The autofocus speed is superb, and I have the siggy 1.4 and it works like a champ.

I have no complaints about the lens at all, however I am almost always handholding it. My wrist actually ends up hurting/cramped/sore at the end of the day.

The weight is the ONLY reason I am getting rid of it

If you have a sharp sharp sharp copy of the 100-400L Ill do your lens + 1500 :)

Hmmm

another thought

70-200 f2.8 OS Sigma + Canon 300 f4L + 1.4ex

.....

tough decisions.

I got it! Gym membership for one year, then the 120-300 2.8 OS once again!

Your last combo looks nice, too. The 70-200 OS is supposedly no slouch, nor is the 300/4L.

I was going to suggest 300/4 IS with 1.4X too. You have the Sigma 1.4X, I see. I don't have any experience with the 300/4 and the Sigma, have used it with Canon 1.4X II extensively and and safely say that's a good combo. I hear great things about the Kenko Pro 300 1.4X DG, too.

The main thing is, the 300/4 IS is pretty easily handheld, if that's your main concern about the 120-300/2.8 OS.

Or sell your 1.4X and 70-200/4 IS too, then get 70-200/2.8 IS II with the new 2X III. It appears to work very well together. That combo will be f5.6, but if shooting outdoors that should be fine (and is what you end up with anyway, if you go the 100-400 route). And you end up with the new 70-200/2.8 in the process, which seems a very good lens (the original is fine, and decent with 1.4X... but not so great with 2X TC).

The 100-400, 300/4 and 70-200/2.8 are all roughly the same size and weight... though adding 1.4X or 2X to the latter two will make them larger than the 100-400.

There are also the Sigma 120-400 OS and 150-500 OS.

It might come down to what you prefer... a prime with a TC, a standard two ring zoom, or a push-pull type zoom (the 100-400).

Or start saving up for the 200-400/4L 1.4X Extender IS, whenever that puppy comes available! ;)

i looked at copies of the sigma 150-500 and canon 100-400 - bought the sigma and it did very well at dayton airshow this summer

at similar focal lengths, the iq was even with the canon being redder slightly and the sigma yellower/ focus was fast, accurate, and i like it - even has os too, a big plus for long lenses

wants for Ls :D , now have 400do;500f4is,600f4 :cool: off to birding and airshows:):):)

Even better - keep the lens for another year, and you can probably skip the gym membership!

looks like someone in this thread is gonna be the proud new owner of this beast! :)

Once it ships, I am going to order a 35L actually instead of the 24L for weddings!

Cant wait to get both lenes! But sad to see this one go :(
