What are you using to trigger the flash?

Do the same tests with the camera pointed at a similar subject. When you are out wide there is a lot of white subjects, when you zoom in its mostly medium tone colors. Its likely fooling your meter. Try to do a scene thats a little more similar in color and reflectivity.

What was the make of the external flash -- if it was a SpeedLite or another ETTL-compatible flash was it set to ETTL? If so, then the flash will act in "Auto", meaning you will need to keep an eye on things and be ready to make some Flash Exposure Compensation adjustments. A lot of people set their flash to Manual, so they can set it once and "forget" it. For on-the-fly and "casual" flash photography ETTL and FEC can be fine, but when you are aiming for a "studio"-type setup you could look into Manual Flash control.

And, either way, whenever you change something in your camera, whether it be your exposure or your focal length, be aware that you may get unexpected results with your flash, so be prepare to "chimp" the first shot or two.

the canon 60d has a built in trigger.
I understand tonylong i will have to try the manual setting and see how that works i know how it work and i played alittle with it. the only problem i have with that is if the subject move closer brighter further away less bright.... but i guess if i use the flash compensation i will be able to make quick changes. I will try that i just wished that it would have worked like magic.
