So tonight i filmed a friends band and i was making sure to keep my eyes on the audio levels the whole time.

I turned it down when the band played so that the levels were landing right around -6dbl but when i actually listened to it it was unbelievably quiet. entirely unusable. any ideas what happened?

I used a sascom cable connect the h4n to my camera. could there be a problem there?

Your level meter was either picking up some low bass or the signal was very peaky. Separate out the audio and open it in something that displays waveform, it'll answer for you.
