I don't get it - If I want to post a photo I am told the maximum size should be no more than 150k yet, I often see photos in the various sections on here of much greater size than that.
Is there some kind of secret posting method which hides the real image size? Where am I going wrong?
Something that hasn't been cleared up, and that is that there is a difference between the image "size" that you see here and the file size limitation.
There are two POTN limits:
First, any image posted here should be a maximum of 1024 pixels at the widest dimension, whether width or height, whether from a Web image host or from uploading from your computer.
Second, if you are uploading from your computer, you still need to abide to the 1024 pixel limit, but also to the 150KB limit.
These are two different things and involve two different settings in your software. The pixel dimensions are determined by your Resize settings. The file size is then set by your jpeg Quality/compression setting.
There is software that can enable you to set an image size in pixel dimensions, and then also a limit in file size, so you can set a max of 1024 pixels at the widest, and then setting a limit of 150KB file size will do it for you.
Or, without that software, you can set a max in pixels, and then just lower your Quality setting until you get the right file size.
A lot of times when I'm directly uploading like this it's not for "serious" photo sharing, so maybe I'll set my resizing dimensions to, say, 800 pixels at the widest and then a Quality setting of "halfway" or lower (5/50 or lower) and the results are fine.
