Using Gels with Umbrellas

I asked this over in the lighting forum but it hasn't been picked up yet so I thought I'd try over here:

I have a wedding today and portraits will be done indoors. I know I will want to allow for a lot of tungsten-based ambient light. I generally do not gel, but will want to do so for these shots.

For portraits, I use either white shoot-through and silver reflective umbrellas. Will the color still look right if I gel and use umbrellas? Is one type of umbrella better suited for a geled flash than the other?

Try it on yourself and find out? Probably the same. I use white bounce umbrellas with gels all the time.

The gels color the light coming off the flash and still help when diffused. It just depends on which modifier you prefer to use.

Shoudl be ok. Personally I don't tend to mix flash and ambient light, I just replace ambient.

That's what I ended up doing. I'm still curious and will have to play around and experiment, though.

I've used gelled speed lights with umbrellas before and it works fine with white or silver. I often use 1/2 CTO if the tungsten is more or less in the background, just to maintain a natural looking warmth in the tungsten with nice skin tones.
