The 97 Switchbacks at Night
by Kurt Lawson, on FlickrThis is the infamous 97 switchbacks on the Mount Whitney Trail. Mount Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. I summited Whitney in 2010 and during that backpacking trip I got the idea for this photo.
One exposure of film. The crazy color came from the way the Provia rendered the starlight and moonlight that night. I don't know if I had grabbed an old expired roll by mistake or if conditions just led to this color happening. I had actually expected a more blue sky based on my other test exposures. At any rate, I think the result is pretty spectacular
The trail path that is illuminated here goes from 12,000 ft to 13,600ft over the course of about 2 miles.
