Hi all,

Breaking with tradition here to post a single image for a change...

IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/photos/i-NTsGDWC/1/XL/i-NTsGDWC-XL.jpg
When we first spotted this bird this morning we both thought... Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak! (a rare visitor for us, but we've got a couple of shots of them in years past). On further examination though, we're both rather sure it is not a Grosbeak at all... and may indeed be our Backyard Bird species #71.

Can anybody help us with a definitive ID?

Thanks in advance,

Kenn

Thanks Bret, Phil and Brad

I guess we should have recognized her, but the Purples are very rare sightings for us here too. We did see a male for the first time ever a few days ago and didn't get a decent shot, so I guess they must be passing thru now.
Here's the best shot (of the very few) we've gotten of the female Purple Finch from a couple years ago:

Looks quite different (mainly in color) from the ones we took this morning. But I guess we must still keep watching for our #71.

And you know we will. :)

Kenn, I'm seeing a few Purples already this year, too. I hardly saw any last year. I would see 10 House Finches and only one or two Purples...and not until the dead of winter.

Are we in for an irruption? Could we maybe see some siskins or perhaps a Redpoll? Dare to dream....

Straightening...lol. Every time I straighten the horizon, I hang the picture crooked.
