I noticed that they have another rumor about an updated 100-400 on Canon Rumors. Sounds interesting, but 2800 seems kind of ridiculous to me. 2000 and I would be all over it. Here's hoping this turns out to be true.

I'll still be all over it. That's probably a MSRP anyway, it'll be a few hundred cheaper. Plus, I can sell my 100-400 I have now to pay for more than half of it.

That's really bad thinking a replacent shouldn't go up 30-50% in price. What if cars would increase 30-50% every 5 years?

um...

Isn't the original about 15 years old?

Also, the updated lens will have had heaps of new tech that's come from expensive R&D going in to it.

If it's anything like the improvement of the 70 -200 IS II over the original, I will be all over it too.

I sense that Canon will kill sales figures of the new 70-300mm L if they price 100-400mm less than $1000 above it. $2800 seems like a reasonable MSRP, at $2500 street price with improved IQ, IS and AF this lens will be very popular (if the rumor is correct, of course).

Hm.. wasn't quite expecting a $2800 price tag. :(

Then again... I kind like the push-pull... think I might miss the push-pull. :D The optics on this thing better be impressive.

I rather see a 400/5.6 prime with IS instead.

But for sports this should be killer.

This lens should do well with the new 1D X! ;)

I'd definitely buy this lens for $2800 if it's as sharp as their recent zoom offerings!

As a lightweight long tele zoom, it's an essential part of my general travel photography kit. Sure, for dedicated wildlife trips, I'll break out my supertele primes (and likely either the 120-300 OS or 200-400L - still to make a decision on that one), but, for general trips, where wildlife isn't the main focus, it's useful to have a long tele that doesn't weigh several kilos by itself...

The 1D X would make the effective focal length shorter.

That lens would retire my 150-500, or at least put it on light duty!

Ring zoom :)

I might actually consider buying one again. That push-pull thing was horrific
