I'm actually indifferent about push/pull. I believe it is faster once you get to know it, but I'm a new adopter and still getting there.

Ring zoom :)

I might actually consider buying one again. That push-pull thing was horrific

I like the push/pull. Its simple and effective. I've played with the new 70-300L and the amount of twist needed to get through the full range is too much for my taste.

Clearly a happy-with or hate thing. I personally hated it. I was also never that impressed by the image quality to be honest, but have obviously been influenced by what i've been subsequently getting off my 300 2.8

I don't mind the push/pull, though there is indeed dust in the inside of my copy. what I really want is better sharpness. I've never felt like this lens gets real sharp until f8. If they can give me 70-200 II quality sharpness plus that quality IS, I'd make the jump.

Haha.. 70-200II sharpness in a 100-400 zoom? If it's possible, then they'd probably hike the pricetag to $4,000+ for such a beast.

This is probably true although I do expect it to be close. I owned the 70-300l for a while and I would be content with similar performance. My copies were very close with the slight edge going to the 70-200 II. Selling my 70-200 was the low point in photography for me and I will own another one eventually.

I tried the 100-400 dust pump, didn't care for it at all. If they replace that with a twist ring I'd look at it.

I rather like the push/pull system. But I suppose it depends on how much rotation is needed to go from 100 to 400. To me, it's rather easy to track and push/pull while keeping the subject in the center. But when twisting, I tend to add lateral shift/movement and or if I needed to go from full wide to full tele... I'd have to release and reacquire my grip. :(

This is a bit interesting to me, but I am not sure I will get it. Now, if they'd update the 24-70 like the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, then I'd be all over that in a heart beat.

I love the push pull zoom. Its so must faster when tracking subjects. Perfect for surf photography.

Its funny I wrote a review of the 100-400 and talked about 'the update' 2 years ago.... And it was an old story then.

push pull is way faster, vs a extendable barrel with twist-zoom. If it was an internal zoom, it would be huge in terms of size--I prefer having it in a compact, compressed size for storage.

I don't like the push-pull design - I find that I need to continually adjust the friction ring, tightening it to stop the lens creeping when holstered/not in use, then loosening it when shooting. Also, the lens seems very heavy when fully extended - I find that the 500L, despite being heavier, actually feels lighter and better balanced than the 100-400L at 400mm.

I'm not sure how a twist-zoom 100-400 would fair any better regarding the weight when fully extended to 400m. It's unlikely they'll be making an internal zoom lens for 100-400. So if it's extending... as the elements slide out, the weight will shift.
