Case for city work

I am visiting South Africa for the first time in Feb and am thinking about cases.

I have some specialist needs because owing to some recent neck surgery and radiculopathy I am limited in what I can can use to tote my gear.

I used to have a lowepro slingshot, but the load on my shoulder and neck was too much. A backpack would not work either.

For roaming the countryside I therefore bought a lowepro beltpack. This is great and works a treat - used it a lot in Florida Everglades.

But we are starting in Cape Town and for city work I will not need to carry spare lenses, cards, batteries, tripod, filters etc. Some travel sites say not to carry any obvious touristy items such as cameras at all. That seems excessive. My Canon EOS 450D and EFS 18 - 200mm lens (or I may even stay with the kit lens in the city) would be least obvious in a generic 'normal' case. Key is it has to be light if it's going round my neck.

Has anyone any particular suggestions, especially based on visiting Cape Town? I think I need to move away from lowepro because they are targeted at the person who wants to carry everything. Maybe I just need to go to Jessops?

Would welcome any insights you can give folks.

Canon EOS 450D (+ old 300D) with kits lens and Canon EFS 18 -200 zoom lens. Canon Pixma Pro 9000 MkII, Photoshop Elements 8 with an eye on 10 :D

Welcome to the forum!

One of the easiest bags I have to carry is the Think Tank Speed Racer. That's the largest of 3 sizes they make. Has a waist belt and shoulder strap. Rather obvious photo gear though.
So you can carry it with the waist belt on and shoulder strap on, limiting bag movement until you want it to move, (:-)) Replaced my Retro10 which many people consider a comfortable camera bag to use.

Can you carry a bag from one shoulder, or with the strap diagonally across your body? (over your head, on the opposite shoulder?)
If you can carry that way, maybe you can achieve the same thing by putting on a waist strap of your choice, on your bag. I might try that sometime with my Domke 3/X ruggedwear.
I would have a concern about showing off tempting camera gear to those people that might need it more than I. :-(

If I were concerned, I would get a good P&S like a G12 and use a sling strap...just a thought. My G9 was a great travel companion when I had a damaged shoulder. I used an OpTech sling under a windbreaker (which might be too hot? depending on the time of year.) That combination kept me from dropping the G a number of times. Worked well in the rain in Quebec City, in October.

sometimes wonder how photographers in the country I want to visit would carry their gear for ease of use, though preventing loss, or damage.
