To everyone:

thanks so much for providing examples and links to information that is very helpful.

Some materials confirm that I'm after the basic noob market. It appears that people are paying about $25 to get some basic knowledge about their new DSLR. It's the same kind of info I'd expect to delivery. In a small group of 2-3 people at a time, I think the hands-on assistance will add another level of learning that might be missed in a more classroom setting of 10 or more people.

Thanks again for the insight each of you has provided. I'll keep you posted as this develops.

dave

I had a friend ask how to take better indoor sports photography. She was taking basketball shots at 1/40th and wondered why nothing was in focus. I told her that we could spend some time going over settings and how to get better results. I told her to bring her camera, lenses (all of them) and the camera's manual. It ended up being a class of about 8 people, all with different cameras. It went just fine. She has let others know I was going to help her and invited them. I think each one left, me included, with some valuable information. They won't be shooting for SI anytime soon, but now they know how to up their shutter speed to freeze action and to take the camera off the little green box (or whatever the Nikon equivalent is). Some of them even had P&S cameras.

Generally speaking, the most successful workshops blend instruction with shooting opportunities that offer opportunities or access that people might not normally get on their own.

You need a "hook" that will make people want to come learn from you.

The leisure 10 week classes blend in room instructions with weekly assignments that are reviewed by the instructor. That is the best way to learn. They get all 10 classes for $75.

Good luck with your endeavors, but go into it with an understanding of what is already being offered. I personally don't see a large demand for this type of instruction at the prices you are looking at. Sure, I think you'll get a few people, but I don't think you will have any steady income from this.

I wouldn't call a 10-week course a workshop...
