For those of you with the Deep Octa, do you use the deflector that comes with it? Do you use the inner diffusor or the outer (or both)?

Depends on what I want. Sometimes inner and out diffusers, sometimes inner only, sometimes just the center deflector and no diffusers.

You point teh meter at teh strobe you are metering
its held next to the model

if doing an incident reading

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

I did just that. Held the lightmeter under the chin, set for 1/200 and it gave me a reading of f/5.6. Here's a scaled down shot, unedited (don't mind the subject, my dad doesn't like cameras)

IMAGE: http://riotography.net/_MG_8194.jpg

No diffusors or anything, just the deep octa and the meter. The exposure seems to be too harsh, but maybe it's just my eyes.

EDIT ADD: Anothing thing, how would I go about reading the metering if I'm going to use 1/160 instead of 200? The D-Lite It 4 is rated at 1/250 but doesn't play well with the shutter on the 5D MK II so I always shoot at 1/160 to escape that wretched shutterlag as can be seen on the shot.

OLD: Canon 5D Mark II, gripped - EF 85mm f/1.8, EF 35mm f/2
CURRENT: Nikon D800, gripped - Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, Sigma 50mm f/1.4

Hi Sheldon,

Unfortunately, in this application the white translucent deflector is no better than placing a square of toilet paper in front of the flash tube. It does practically nothing. You really need the 100% opaque deflector to equalize the center hot spot and area surrounding it.

I beg to differ (a lot) on this, Robert. I personally think the 135 wide with the white translucent deflector does a better job of more evenly distributing the light on the background than it does with a silver deflector on. Case in point (I think the images are self explanatory): :)

Set the meter to 1/125. You don't have enough ambient contribution to make much difference anyway. You're sure your matching ISO on the meter to the camera? Dome out.

And I'll have to beg to differ as well, Leo.

I have some images I'll post shortly that show something very different. The comment about the square of toilet paper was an exaggeration but my results clearly show the white deflector to be inferior to either mini or maxi silver deflector when it comes to coverage.

The box is sitting in my office right now! You might beat me though... I am watching the kids and trying to finish up work before vacation starts.

Maybe later tonight. :)

LOLOL! :)

Just so we're clear, by white translucent deflector we're talking about the one that also comes packaged with the Rotalux soft box these days and not the frosted deflector which lets through more light, right?

I wouldn't dream of using more than iso 100 in a studio. :p

They're working me to death, folks. I officially retired from my govt. job Nov 23, 2010.
As of Jan 1 of 2011, I've worked 155 days. I told my wife I'm friggin exhausted. She's got no sympathy for me.

BTW, Since this is the MKIV thread, I figured I'd join since it's my body. And I'll cry if I want to.
