I am not reacting to a not over the top critique, I am reacting to a silly comment in a lighting forum. Now if you would like to jump over in the food photography forum and post the same comment I would probably reply with:

I was just messing around in my garage (studio) with my Elinchrom lights and I had a piece of pie on hand. So going out and hiring a food stylest was out of the question.

I would have also said that I planned on eating the pie so I didn't really feel the need to be crazy careful cutting it.....

Here is the problem with this forum (and other public photography forums):

You have people here who want to be photographers, and you have people here who want to be hobbyists. All trying to interact and "get better". The problem is that hobbyists don't usually want to get much better than a hobbyist.... or at least, they aren't willing to put in the work required to get any better than most other hobbyists.

So you have people who are photographers and those that want to become photographers pointing out the little nits in others photos that separate the hobbyists from the pros. Pros and hopeful pros will take these comments and be like "oh... OH... I see what you're saying, I hadn't thought about that... but if I ever want to create a sellable body of work, or market myself professionally in any way, shape, or form, I need to take that into consideration when making shots like this one" (re: neatly cutting a piece of food so that it looks good and not sloppy).

But a hobbyist comes at it with the attitude of: "well, pfft... I was going to eat the pie, I just wanted to mess with this sweet equipment I've got and make a cool picture of pie".

Great, super.... set up your multiple >$300 Elinchrom lights with expensive modifiers, light the picture perfectly, and then take a poorly executed picture. If you like it... perfect! Enjoy your picture! Print it and put it in your kitchen!

But if you are posting your picture to a forum that is inhabited by people that are better than you and those that want to become better than you, you have to expect and be willing to tolerate some measure of nitpicking.

It is the method by which we all correct OUR OWN photos, and it is only natural to pick out issues in most photos we see.

Commenting on the quality of the subject is by no means a "silly comment on a lighting forum". If you don't want your picture taking to improve, fine.... but don't expect people who DO want their picture taking to improve to approve of your poor execution.

I agree with some of what you are saying.

My point being....if this was a food photography thread, I would expect comments like watch how you cut it, keep the cream topping from running etc.....because you are posting a pic in a thread where other food photographers are talking, shooting and helping each other shoot food product shots.

In here, other than as of late, we talk Elinchrom lights and those expensive modifiers that you pointed out. So yeah, I thought his comment about the cutting of the pie was out of place.

I probably should have taken a little more time to explain the purpose of the photo.

Also, something tells me he doesn't know the "mood" of this thread.

Poor execution? Please...do tell (other than my lack of pie cutting skills...;)

BTW: In regards to wanting to learn and improve your photos....I posted a similar shot in the food section and it was pointed out that I had a hot spot on some fruit. I never noticed it. So I do know what you saying.

if the point of the picture was to make you hungry, then it is a massive success! It's lunch time!

To generalize everyone into one category reeks false arrogance, and the inability to separate ones self from the trap and bane of mankind :)

Every dog chases cat's, yes, probably, but that would require a thorough investigation of every dog on the planet? Every Italian loves pizza, most likely, but who's to say? The list is endless, as are the possible outcomes, correct?

I like this very ice, and subtle! It feels as if milk and cornflakes will fall and land on the trawberries, regardless of no bowl! xD lol
