.tif statistical tool

Anyone know of a good statistical tool for verifying the actual bit depth of data in a TIFF file? I am genuinely curious to see if that 14 bit A/D is indeed being fed 14 bits of data.

I may have to write one but would rather explore the alternatives first.

I just found an open source .tiff library. I may just develop a statistical tool for tiff files so we can see what the camera or scanner are capturing in terms of resolution and color palette.
