Imagine you have been asked to do the cover photo (background, not the lettering) for a "coffee-table" book on the subject of literature (one definition: "books and written composition valued for for form and style"), format either portrait or landscape.

This challenge begins when posted, and will end at 12:00 noon Pacific time Wednesday 23 November 2011. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.


Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:


1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - * ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.* Photo Name in the message subject line.* Camera model & lens used.* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Keep it clean, and both Family and Work-safe.
8. Have questions, PM me.
9. Have FUN!

RESULTS!

As the photos started coming in for this challenge I soon realized that more than one entrant had misunderstood the subject. That occasionally happens on POTN challenges and, when it does, the person setting the challenge must accept the blame for not making the subject clear enough, so please accept my apologies. I wanted photos illustrating the whole subject of literature, not photos matched to individual works.

Anyway, thanks to everyone, particularly to those who "got it". Some comments:

Kevan: The symmetrical composition worked really well. I know many stories start with the phrase "Once upon a time" but don't think the connection with "literature" is obvious without the title. Would make a great cover for one of my favourite sci-fi books, "Time and Again". I'll bet you could use this photo in another challenge.

Rawshorty: Great idea but I would have liked to see the same shot larger, not so narrow, sharper and brighter.

Maureen: Beautiful landscape - Arizona? Had to laugh - that formation left of centre that seems to be giving me the finger!

PINNACLE: Fine shot of a raven. I know from experience that crows, ravens and black bears are so black that it's hard to get a good result, but you have pulled it off. It seems to have a band on it's leg - tame bird?

Jason C: A striking shot but puzzling as I just couldn't see any connection between a post office and literature, or even a book that I'd heard of until I read the explanation underneath.

GarryKirsch: Books, reading glasses, nice sepia tone - would make an excellent cover.

HunterW: Liked the shot but struggled to see any connection to literature.

T3HeavyShop: Idea good but I think less white and more definition would be an improvement.

Congrats to Garry for the win! Teekay, my shot was taken in Arches Natl Park, Utah. As I type we are heading home from Death Valley, anothe beautiful national park.

A good competition with a tricky topic. The Raven was taken at the Tower of London, they are kept but as for tame I wouldn't want to get any closer than I did.

Congrats Garry, that's a perfect shot for a book cover.
